Well, I like the P-38 too; however, please be aware of the following quote from page 281 of the "Firearms Assembly" manual for pistols and revolvers, published by the NRA, copyright 1993:

"Pre-war Walther HP and P.38 pistols were manufactured and finished to the highest shop standards. This is not true of P.38s produced later during the war. Inferior materials, shoddy workmanship and outright sabatage by conscripted laborers combine to make some of the pistols produced during 1944 and 1945 dangerous to use."
