John, Sorry for the delay, I have been out of town.
I have looked this one over closely and it is in excellent condition from what I can see in photo's. The thread is light inside and light in places outside so I doubt if it has been thoroughly dyed except on manufacture. At least the threads do not appear to have taken up any dye. They just appear dirty and this can happen over time or the original dye can bleed a little onto the threads. I also do not believe it has had any shoe polish applied. If it did it would be shiney. It appears to be a flat black. Also I have never seen a Luger holster made with pigskin anything but black. Other holsters I have seen natural, smaller ones, such as mausers. I concur with most of what Garfield had to say about value. Pigskin is rare , I believe the Germans considered it an inferior leather because it stretches and can be soft. Not in all cases but generally cowhide is a better leather. You will notice that most high stress areas are cowhide, like the belt loops. Really nice example and will bring premium money if enough people see it. Thanks for asking , Jerry Burney

Re: Pigskin Holsters
I have seen a photograph of an original pigskin Imperial Navy holster in brown. Derek Seltzer has seen it in the flesh. I am hoping to bump into the owner at the upcoming MAX show and make him an offer he can't refuse. If I am successful, of course I will send pics to those who are interested.
