I bought this Colt yesterday. All correct and original. Ain't she a beauty. Colt wishes they could make guns like this now.... Can't help bragging....

Congrats on a truly beautiful slabside. Gawd, how I love M1911s. Had the occasion about 33 years ago to .. one in a gunfight during the unpleasantries in S.E. Asia. Very impressive effects on moving human targets. Sorta flipped him, cart wheel style, into the air when hit with a lower buttock shot from the enfilade.

I know the guy was on the morning report at Uncle Ho's Surgical Evac Hospital the next day and I think his morale musta been low. Bet he can predict a change in the weather before the weatherman, just as I can now. Amazing how war wounds stick around. Amazing what one of those fishing sinkers can do at 850 FPS.

Told Number 2 son, who is out ... hunting, to always use a M1911 if he could; luckily he is with a ...and he said"Dad, we don't use those Beretta ***** mouse guns." Also advised him, like he needs advice from this old fart, always shoot 'em twice. Ammo is cheap.

Loving 45 ACP almost as much as Navy Lugers,

Oh Tom, I had the ocassion to depend on this .45 to save my butt on July 13, 1967 in a rice paddy near the Go Cong River. In a gunfight that lasted under 4 seconds I got one shot stops on 3 small gentlemen wearing black pajamas. God bless the .45 ACP. I told my wife of many, many years to never put me in the position of having to choose between her and this Colt.......

This Colt has not been fired from that day to this.....

There is an old proverb that goes like this.

"THERE IS NO SECOND PLACE WINNER IN A GUNFIGHT".

It seems that 1911's are liked the world over by most of us...A 45 is still a 45 and a COLT is a COLT....just got a great Christmas gift from a friend: an all original 1877 Lightning 38 cal sixshooter...

I also found a nice Commercial 1911 that I couldnt pass...and I'm waiting a WWI US Military Colt pistol made in 1918...

By the way, I sent you a PM...cause I need your expertize on those 1911's... <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

John,

You and I share very similar experiences and appreciation for John Browning's masterpiece.

I have one that is historically significant. It was carried by LTC. Leon Rollman, the first American to enter Yokohama and Tokyo after the cease fire in Aug-Sept 1945. Its a late 1943 production Colt in unfired condition with a Scovile mag and the original holster. Rollman's notarized statement about the piece says he carried the piece in his musette bag wrapped in oil cloth throughout the war. I have the musette bag also. Am trying to find a home for it to bank roll some recent Luger acquisitions.

Interesting piece with impeccable provenance.

Hey John... Nice Colts... They are my First favorite gun. Lugers are a close second.

I know the author of your proverb...

His name was Bill Jordan... a U.S. Border Patrolman (now deceased).

He authored an excellent book on gunfighting by almost the same title:

"No Second Place Winner"

I can remember watching a film clip of Bill Jordan back in the early 70's showing him balancing a ping pong ball on the back of his extended hand. He then dropped his hand and drew a .357 magnum and shot the ball as it passed his beltline... the man was FAST.

The book is recommended reading for this current generation of gun enthusiasts.

John, I read Jordan's book many years ago.. My father and Mother were both the Sheriff of San Patricio County, Texas and here is a photo of their badges. I met many members of the Border Patrol and Texas Ranger during that time.

They were the type of LEO that we don't see much of today. My father had a good friend in the Rangers named Ralph Rohatch and when he passed away his wife gave me the Colt Super .38 he carried. The Colt Govt. Model that my father carried, I gave to my eldest son years ago and he carried it in Desert Storm.

My son said that one day when the wind and sand were so bad they couldn't fly, He walked into the desert with the old Colt and his issue M9 Beretta and fired them both. The M9 went about 5 round and jammed from the sand, the Colt kept shooting as long as he kept feeding it .45ACP....

He called the M9, "His Wop pop gun"...... Heh, Heh

If you are serious, we can talk. Have a physician up in "down east" Maine also making serious "come hither" sounds. She ain't cheap, and in her military finish, she ain't nearly as purty as that one you showed us but she is a wonderful piece of history in damn near new condition!
