The Japanese Zero find is quite rare - I think there are only 2 or 3 that have been recovered or restored.
I saw one restored Zero and one that was in it's current condition, totally flat, that was recovered from it's ocean crash site. This is in the Kamikaze Museum, south of Kagoshima, where they operated from regularly. It's the southern most part of the main island. Under the video clip above was a recounting of the planes shown. I don't know if it's accurate or correct, but such finds are always fascinating to me. Just crawling through a B-17 or a B-24 was hard enough for me in blue jeans - imagine trying to work in there with the heavy wool lined outfits, gloves, oxygen masks, goggles, etc. Here was the descriptions that go with the slide show: 1) Japanese A6M Zero - damaged in combat during Marianas Turkey Shoot June 1944. Crash landed at Japanese airbase on Guam, pilot died from injuries later. Recovered in early 1960s restored and now on display in Japan 2) Ju-88 - force landed in 1942 with damage on Svalbard in the Arctic Circle after attack on ship convoy. Crew destroyed plane and were rescued. Same aircrew all KIA a few months later serving in the Mediterranean. 3) P-40 - pilot flew in wrong direction during a ferry flight for repairs and ignored signals to turn around. Presumed ran out of fuel and pilot died in desert. Plane recently found and removed with plans to display in UK if it ever makes it out of Egypt in one piece. 4) Russian Arkhangelsky Ar-2 - very rare plane found in Russia and was unfortunately sold for scrap when property owner had financial trouble 5) Ju-52 - force landed during supply mission and crew was able to walk away to a nearby German camp. 6) B-24 in desert Lady Be Good, radio direction finder failed and overflew airbase and into desert, crew parachuted out and died in desert. Discovered 1958, plane moved to Libyan military compound and will probably eventually be displayed at new Libyan museum that recently opened. 7) B-24 on Atka Island, Alaska force landed in bad weather with one crewman injured. 8) Fw-190 - engine failed on return flight from mission to bomb train, belly landed and pilot taken POW by Russians. Plane abandoned by Luftwaffe in remote area. Pilot survived Russian captivity and returned to Germany in 1949, died 1989. Plane salvaged in 1991, restored as the only original Fw190 that is flying. 9) TB-3 - don't know much about this wreck and will have to research |
