EW -Einwohner

A few weeks ago, I was shown a 1916 DWM.

On the matching mag was carved "E" over top the serial and "W" below.

Yesterday, I saw 1917 DWM with the exact same "E", "W" carving on the mag.

Neither pistol had the usual EW<city Mark> (eg: EWB) on the grips.

Is it possible that the EW carved on the mags was not a person's initials, but an "Einwohner" designation?

Anything is possible but I doubt it.

S, I've had an E marked Dutch wood bottomed mag in the past, which proved to be an "exercise" test mag. TH PS: a photo would probably draw more response.

According to Martens and de Vries, the Dutch "E" marked magazines were not intended for shooting but were used as training devices to practice loading the magazine with dummy rounds. (They function just like regular magazines, so they can be loaded with live rounds just as well).

Sure would be nice to see photos of an "EW" marked magazine. I have never seen one and have no idea of its origin.
