Default Bought a new P.38 yesterday. LOTS OF PICS.

Hello everyone I just wanted to post up a recent pistol that I bought just yesterday seeing it's been awhile since I have posted anything for quite a while...

A friend of mine about a week ago wanted me to answer a couple questions for him about a pistol that his friend had. He mentioned it was a "9.38" but after seeing the pictures they sent me it was clearly a P.38. I told them all I could think of regarding the gun and his friend thanked me.

Fast forward to a couple days ago my friend again messaged me online saying the owner wanted to sell the pistol. I mentioned that I might be interested...his friend in turn sent me these pics...

From what I could tell in the pics it was a "CYQ" marked P.38 made by Spreewerke and from what someone pointed out on the P.38 forum it was made in Mar. 1945. Although the "Y" on the slide looks more like a "V". There are no import markings and all the numbers appear to match..and I don't believe the pistol has been refinished.

I told the owner I was interested in the gun and we arranged to meet yesterday..inspecting the pistol in person made it look a lot better then it did in the pictures he sent me. After some small talk we agreed on a price and I walked away with this P.38 for $300.

The only catch was it didn't come with a magazine. The seller wasn't sure where it was as he didn't get one when he got the pistol. He also stated that it was given to him by his grandfather..but he doesn't know where his grandfather obtained it from.

After giving the pistol a through cleaning it looks much better in person, very minimal rust with the most bluing loss being on the front strap. Also the barrel is bright and shiny with sharp rifling.

Here are some pics I just took after cleaning it up. Enjoy!

Anyways I think that about covers everything. Sorry if this post seems to be a bit of a long one. I just wanted to share. If anyone reading this knows something about this particular P.38 that I don't please feel free to chime in!

New unused P1 magazines will fit and are plentiful...At least they were when I bought mine, a year or two ago...Check GB...

BTW: Your pics at P38Forum will only show up here to members of that forum...I'm a member but not signed in, and they don't show up for me...I have the same problem when I want to link a pic on this forum to other forums and the members there aren't members here...

Ah, John D. made an upgrade and passwords have been obliterated...No wonder I'm not logged in...

OK, I requested/changed/upgraded my password there, and logged in, and now your pics show up here...The first two are upside down, but wth...

Also, if I may inject a warning from my own personal experience, do not trust the 'de-cocking' lever...It may fire off a round...Make sure you have it aimed in a safe direction if you do use it...It'll save you the trouble of having to patch holes in doors...

If you plan to shoot your new P.38, might i suggest that you stick with standard velocity ammo, and none of the NATO, +P, or +P+. These handguns were manuf. long before this kind of ammo was available, and were not built/tested for it. I don't believe that you want any broken parts on an all matching gun.

Nice score! If you plan to shoot it, sign up at the P.38 Forum first (http://p38forum.com) and read the thread in the link below. You might change your mind after seeing the pictures.

Sorry for the pics not working I'll just gave it another try hopefully they will all show up now. I posted the remaining pics in this post...

As for the magazine issue until I track down the correct mag I went ahead and picked up a Post war P1 mag off ebay. As for shooting it I'm leaning more towards not...if I do it will be something like PMC and it will be very sparingly if any.

What!?!? After we all went over and upgraded our passwords?!?!

Original P-38 magazines are as expensive as original Luger magazines...Or at least the lizards on GB seem to think so...

Hmmmm...John D. upgraded P38forum.com to vBulletin® Version 3.8.4...This Luger Forum is still vBulletin® Version 3.7.4...Is there an upgrade in our immediate future as well???

BTW: Ed Tinker still has a few WW II P-38 magazines for sale over on that forum...

That is a really nice cyq P.38. It's a bit rarer due to the "a" in front of the serial number. Go to the P38forum for information on these and get a WWII proper "jvd" mag for this pistol.
