Talking Mauser Banner

I would like to start by complimenting you all on this forum for the apparently very knowlegable replies you give to questioners. I find it all very interesting. I recently photographed the luger shown in switzerland. I would like to learn anything you can tell me about it.There is a one digit mismatch in the numbers on barrel and frame, could this have been an error from new?Now i only have to upload the photos lol lol

I'd like to see several photos of the mismatched numbers on the frame/barrel.
Thanks!

To start a new thread of your own you need to access the "NEW TOPIC" function. You do this by clicking on the appropriate forum subject, in this case it would be "All P-08 Military Lugers". This will bring up the forum subject window with the "NEW TOPIC" button at the top left.

The serial number being one off in the "tens" position is a bit unusual! It could be a factory error, or it could have been done by the unit armorer that had several Lugers disassembled at the same time and just mixed up the tops and bottoms because the numbers are so similar (that would be my guess).

"Banner" refers to the Mauser trademark (commonly called the Mauser banner) on the toggle rather than a military code such as "byf", which was one of the wartime production codes used to disguise Mauser as the manufacturer of the weapon. The Eagle/N proof on the left side of the receiver over the serial number identifies this gun as a commercial model and therefore has the Mauser trademark.

P.S. David, looks like we almost had a "photo finish" posting!

Banner refers to the word Mauser on the top toggle. Other guns made by Mauser used "codes" such as byf or 42 or s/42, etc. I assume it was something to do with Nazi discretion being exercised since they were not suppose to be re-arming, however other members could tell you more on that rationale.
I find the discrepancy in the serial numbers interesting and to the right collecter it should not hurt the value. Sort of like stamps, the most sought-after stamps are those unusual ones with errors.

So this is a normal army luger? not police, nothing else odd about it? There is no numbering on the magazine at all,and the base is aluminium.

Laxarus, The Mauser Banner toggle was used in many commerical, contract & police lugers; not military. After April 1940 they all would have had the E/N test fire proofing, but if police probably would have also had a police acceptance marking on the right receiver. I believe that I also see an "X" mark on the left receiver, which would indicate Russian capture, so they may be responcible for the mismatch. TH

Tom,
The only marks on the left receiver are the serial number and Eagle/N.
