Default s/42 1938 luger without inspection marks

Purchased 1938 s/42 luger, all matching serial #s, noticed it does not have the inspection proof marking on right side of reciever or barrel. I do see some wear there, light but no sanding or grinding marks, even under magnifying glass can not see markings. Does anyone know what type of luger I may have, commercial? military?. My concern is that it is a german made luger from ww 2. appreciate any help. regards dave.

dave welcome to th forum.

No 1938 S/42's were made for the commerical market, so they have to have had the proofs and acceptance taken off.

Pictures would help.

Is it all matching?

The Great Karnak says....

..... it's a Russian capture Luger with force-matched numbers!

Of course I have no basis for this conclusion, but then there is very little information to go on.

If stamped '1938' on the chamber, it should have some sort of military marking on the right side of the reveicer. A picture would be the next step Dave, without that we all need to look into our glass balls.
It's mighty peculiar I'll tell ya, mighty peculiar indeed..

Dave, Does your 1938 luger have any double crown/U proofing on the LEFT side of the receiver or a Mauser Banner toggle link? If so, a full serial number including suffix letter would be helpful. TH

Upon further exam, it looks like the proof/inspection marks were removed from the right side of the receiver then someone tried to touch up with blueing over that side of the receiver, the eagle proof was removed from the right side of the barrel and it looks like where a waffen mark on the left side of barrel may have been was sanded/brushed off. Anyone have a idea as what this done to the value, all numbers match except clip, grips have matching number. have a another clip and 1939 holster with tool, all in great shap just some marked name in leather from prior owner i assume and pen written name inside. disappointed someone took the marks off.
