Default Another Feeding Problem

I have a .30 Luger that's having a feeding problem. On the first rounds out of the magazine ( a new MecGar), it won't go into battery by about one-half inch. I can reach up and push it into battery easily. It does this until the last 2-3 rounds in the magazine then everything is just fine. Feeds perfectly.

Does this sound like a recoil spring problem????

Not clear to me if you mean the first round fed from the mag, or the first round after the first round fired...

regardless, if there is no real "jam" then the recoil spring or main spring could be the culprit. ...but before I change it, I would make sure the gun is real clean and properly lubricated...

If the new mag is the only one you have, I would try others too... it may be that the one you have is just not a good mate to the gun.

Mike, Before you go to the trouble of changing the recoil spring, I would suggest trying a few other magazines with less powerful springs or perhaps a hotter loaded ammo. TH

With 7 rounds in the magazine the first 4-5 rounds do the following:

-round stripped out of the magazine and fed into chamber;
-breachblock will not close completely (open about 1/2");
-a light push on the toggle will close the breachblock;
-fires, ejects, feeds another round but breachblock will not close completely.

Does this on every round until the last 2-3 rounds then it functions perfectly.

I've used Fiocchi and some stiff reloads. Doesn't matter which are used same thing happens.

Same thing happens on the orginal magazine except feeding isn't as reliable.

Gun has been cleaned with brake cleaner and lightly lubed.

Mike, it still sounds like the magazine to me!! If you can have access to a 122, fxo or a post war 2/1001 marked magazine, try one of these. I have found them to be the most reliable of all Luger magazines.

Good Luck!!

Mike,
Hate to be contrary to what Frank says, but sounds like a weak recoil spring to me. If it wont close when the mag is full or 1/2 full, when the mag spring is exerting the most pressure against the bottom of the toggle, then works ok when only a couple of cartridges are left in the mag, when the mag spring is exerting less pressure on the bottom of the toggle, then it needs a stronger recoil spring to close completely against the stronger mag spring pressure.

Hugh:

Makes sense to me---not knowing the complete inner working of a Luger I wasn't sure if it was the recoil spring or the main spring.

Thanks

Default Luger Jam

Hi:

Well, let's try this theory.

Your ammo is too short. The factory 7.65mm I've measured is all way too short to properly feed those first three or so rounds off the top of the mag.

If you are reloading anyway, try your final oal at 1.173 inches exactly.

Rounds that are too short will usually hang-up in the magazine, rather than feed properly. The problem gets less critical the fewer rounds there are in the magazine.

Also, none of the commercial ammo I've tried is loaded hot enough in the 7.65mm.

Sieger

PS: Do try another magazine first.
