I looked at a 1938 S/42 Mauser at gun show today that has me puzzled. On the right side were 4 proofs instead of the usual three. The left most proof looked like a WaA number, followed by the usual E/63 E/63 then Army test proof. Any ideas on what the fourth one could have been ? Gun had all matching external serials, 90% original blue, period correct mag, owner is asking $750. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the serial number. Any and all suggestions welcome !

Roger,
* Pretty slim detail to warm up the ole crystal ball upon. * However, if I were to guess....the only thing coming to mind immediately is the Heereszuugamt marking of the form E/HZAJ.L.## which is similar to an E/WaA## stamp. * Thought to indicate a WW2 repair undertaken by a German Repair Facility. This the repair acceptance stamp. * See John Walter, TLB, Pg. 137, Item H62 for further info. He indicates there were 16 of these bureaus operating in 1939; but, the location is not given for each ##. * On detail examination, you may find another similar HZA marked component, like a sear or ejector or ??, which bears the same marking. This is usually the component repaired/replaced. * These are seen now and then. IMO: I would not consider a premium is warranted for this marking. Some may even consider this a discountable item as it was a repair. I view anomoly as just another part of the pistol's history. Respectfully, Bob |

Bob,
thank you very much sir, that describes the stamp correctly. Thank you for the information. A good friend is thinking of buying the pistol, he may now make a more informed decision. Roger |
