thanks Dwight for the info and the sideplate picture.

I realize I have most of the information that I can get, but I was reading The Luger Story by Walters, and he states;

Ledgers kept by Tauscher from 1913-1917... show sales of 1,697 30 cal new model american eagle and 472 .38 (9mm I am sure is the same) new model american eagle serial numbered 38349 - 65800...

Kenyon states approx 3,000 AE 9mm.

my question is;
I am guessing that after WW1 there were 9mm american eagles made, but they'd be serial number ??

Ed,

Here is a photo of all the Swiss sideplates used.

Take a look at the last two on the far right side of this photo...either a '24 Bern late sideplate or a M1929 Bern sideplate...photo is from Bobb'a 1st. book on Swiss lugers.

Pete, is it your feeling this sideplate is from the Swiss, that this was in Switzerland? With the germany stamp, I'd think a english speaking country?

Ed,

The last 06-style American Eagle in the database is sn68977; the first 1914-style with a commercial serial number is sn70319. It looks like the onset of the war ended 1906 American Eagle production.

I haven't sorted the Tauscher numbers that way, sounds like a good idea to confirm it. It is worthwhile noting that, while the Tauscher record show -sales- 1913-1917 (Costanzo documents 1913-1914), These guns were manufactured as early as 1909 and in large, continuous number ranges throughout the commercial series until 1914.

I'm not Pete, but my guess is that this gun was never in Switzerland, that at some point it needed a sideplate and it was forced number matched by someone who had no clue about different sideplate styles.

I wanted to bring this thread up again, since I also have a 1906 AE 9mm w/ a Brazilian contract barrel. Or a circle/ B proof marked barrel as Ron stated. If I hadn't seen this thread before getting it I might have sent it back, thinking that it wasn't correct. The S# is 45165, not that far from Ed's.
I was wondering if you have heard of any more or if you have any more info. concerning the barrels?

The Commercial database shows circle-B barrels interspersed sporadically between s# 44717 and s# 49426. They are reported in .30, but there is at least one 9mm.
