and want to look into another Luger besides my totally fine and satisfactory 42 1940 all matching #9622 parts and magazine that makes a ragged hole at 30' with either Winchester Silvertips or Gecco Hardball (the only two I have tried!).
Why do I want another? I don't know! Help me spend just under $1,000.00 that came my way for gratuity and stipend! John St Is this Shattuck guy reliable? I really like my dealer here in Arizona (Trail Boss Outfitters on the corner of 5th and Bartow, Sierra Vista). John St I think he is since all like him. He must be close since I am in Sierra Vista AZ. How can I contact him and see his place? I do not know where Peoria is. |

Every Luger enthusiast should have the opportunity to see a room full of Lugers, whether it be at Shattuck's or Simpson's or anyone else... Living as close as you do, I would recommend a visit to Shattuck's... call and make an appointment... but since the "bug" is still new... leave your checkbook at home.
You need to buy several historical references on Lugers... I recommend the books by Jan C. Still and then decide what type of Lugers you want to specialize in... otherwise you will end up in the poorhouse buying every Luger you ever come across ![]() See what Ralph Shattuck has to offer, sleep on it, pray about it, and then call and tell him which one you are interested in... Good luck, because there is NO cure for the 'bug'

Your advice is well taken. I am happy with this one shooter and I am wringing it out for everything before I let my eyes wander to another.
Makes the original more special that way! I already know I want to stay in WWII for Military Lugers--like my first. Beyond this I still need to think some more--maybe a 42 collection with different dates and such. That's about as much as I'd care to go for now. I'm not interested in older stuff. John St |

John, you are sick and the medicine is more Lugers!
Yes, buy Third Reich Lugers by Jan still, he has some right now that he just had republished. Buy it, read it and then look around. Search the forum using the search function, words like 1935 G date, 1940 Mauser, etc. You will enjoy the reading and find out more than you ever thought possible! Your collection can be huge, even with a certain date, as the variations are about endless (estimated there are 300 variations, but I believe when you take into account assorted proofs, etc., that the variations pool must be huge !!. John,
yes the bug can really get to a guy. John Sabato had some good advice. Leave your checkbook home at first. Take your time, at first, to familiarize yourself with quality, prices and fakery. When you think you are ready to go on a big buying spree take a trusted friend with you to help you remove emotion from your buying. That is no put down on you intelligence. Ed mentioned that there are 300 diferent kinds on Lugers out there. I have heard 550. But no matter who you believe, there are lots of them. Then there are the Lugers that someone has messed with and created something else. The sellers of these guns will frequently try to tell you that these are rare prototypes or some such garbage. You see them all the time on the internet and at gun shows. These guys are just trying to unload their creations at a high price on the unsuspecting guy who has money to spend. These creations will be on the same table for a long time so don't be in a hurry to get sucked in. The above mentioned Jan Stills book is a must for someone just starting out. Especially if you have isolated your hunt for Lugers to the Nazi Era Lugers. Other good books are "Lugers at Random' by Charles Kenyon Jr and "The Luger Book" by John Walter. These last two books can be frequently found on Ebay. Finally, get an issue of GUN LIST magazine at your local magazine store. Some stores don't carry it. But look around. There are lists of upcoming gun shows and their dates. A few extra miles on your car for a good gun show is worth the effort. You will soon be able to differeniate the good shows from the bad. But even bad shows might have that one good Luger on rare occasion. How many times do you have to find a treasure to be successful? There is a close relationship between hard work and good luck. Hi John,
So save key strokes and time, just do a search on my previous posts about what new collectors need to do. I think you will find it beneficial and save you loads of money. Tom A. |

Two other items. Charles Kenyon does a monthly column for The Gun Report. A fair amount of (educated) speculation, but also new info that has not made it into books.
Membership in the National Automatic Pistol Collectors Assn. brings a monthly newsletter with member contributions. A lot on German pistols and, of course, on the Luger. Again some specualtion, and a lot that is so esoteric as to approach silliness, but also some good info. Jim |

I just got my new issue of "Gun List" magazine. In it there is a item by Jan Still about how to order one of his books. It is in the Lugers area. I am posting this for new members to the forum who may not have seen previous posts on the subject.

John St,
Do not choose a dealer because of location. Shipping is cheaper than gasoline. Inspection periods can allow more time to consider a purchase than a visit to the gun shop. A gun shop purchase will allow only a few hours of inspection and consideration while a three day inspection will allow consideration without the distraction of several competing pistols.

The dealer, Wes, on my location now, Gary, of Trail Boss Outfitters, is true. He is the one who sold the 42 1940 to me and he told me the background of the owner. I know for a fact he won't deal with untruth.
Another dealer in Tucson, Brian of Murphy's Guns, can also be trusted. The rest are in it for themselves with desparate aim. Yes, I will hold on to the 1K until I see what looks like a fair bargain for all. It will be a Third Reich pistol from 42 Mauser for sure. John St |

I'll keep my Luger.
I don't need another! You guys who love Lugers are easily easily the intoxicated wine tasters of extremely lovely vintages! Nothing beats a Luger! |
