Bring Back Papers~

Are there records that show how many firearms and what kind were brought back by our troops? The coincidance is the artillery is also 3097. Although I purchased it from George Anderson, he assures me there is no connection~ Nice~

Eric, I doubt it.

Te papers were issued at a field officer level to permit the soldier to re-enter the USA with his captured firearm.

It wasn't US Government property and our government had no need to track it.

We've always had an aversion to "registration" in any form, so I doubt any further record was made of the gun.

I know there are some [especially on GB] who think the bringback papers "add to the value of the Luger", but I have never thought that. They just show who originally owned it (besides the German).

Think about it - Do you show your present wife your first marriage certificate and tell her that it adds immeasurable value to that marriage??? Do you display it with the picture of your first wife???

Of course not! It's just a piece of paper, worthless now, since it no longer belongs to you. The Luger or the wife.

Now, if it was the bringback paper that your father/granddad brought back with the Luger you inherited, then it would be like his wife [your mother/grandmother] and their marriage certificate. You would display it proudly - it's your family!!!

Someone else's bringback paper is someone else's family. Why would you care about a marriage certificate from some guy you never heard of??? Or his wife's picture??? Makes no sense.

Now our aversion is bringing back firearms or even bayonets. Sad that we are short changing today's servicemen on their combat trophies.

First, I posted it for the coincidence. Multible lugers share the same serial number. Its just another part of luger history that deserves to be shown!! I am sure that it might be the first time seen by some of us as it was for me! I fail to understand your analogy~ I'm on my third wedding licence and 2 divorse decrees! And survived so far with all my Lugers!

Most collectors think "papers" add to the value of the piece; especially if the serial number is noted.

We've had this discussion ad infinitum on the Japanese board, but regarding "how much" more not "if". Depending on lots of stuff, papers add $25 to $500 in some opinions.

I like them and would like to have a luger with papers.

I would not pay anything for any bringback paper, because they are too easy to fake. Old paper is readily accessible, and typewriter font (or even typewriters) are available as well. It's too easy to print up a fraudulent bringback paper and claim it's original.

One thing to look for in bringback papers is whether the writing is done with a ballpoint pen. As Eric's paper in post #1 shows, they were not yet in general use in WW II.

I agree they are interesting but to me add no value. There has been so many faked that who knows what is real? I have an old typewriter and a few fountain pens so how many do you want? Bill

It is kind of like a "fake" luger, if you can't tell the difference it does not matter.

Fortunately is is pretty easy to sort the new from the old, and the fake from the real.

If "we" had the same attitude on the luger pistol, we could not collect them- because it is too easy and too many have been faked over the years!

I purchased it from George Anderson along with the artillery luger although not associated with the gun! Its old, real, fragile, folded and 2 different types of ink and two different handwriting styles by two different scriveners~Enlarge it 2X and then examine it!~Eric

Of course it is "real", point is that some folks don't collect paper because they think it is worthless or silly.

They probably never collected stamps either.

I don't doubt that it is real. The fountain pen writing was the first thing I noticed.

Watching classic WW II movies this last week and seeing Richard Burton pull a ball point pen out of his pocket and write a name in his notebook brought a smile to my face.

To my way of thinking, bringback papers are only useful if you're making a display or a diorama. It's another accessory, like cartridges or a cleaning rod. It looks nice, but it doesn't really add any value to the Luger itself.

If these are worth $500, then maybe I'm wasting my time making long-barrel pistols. I could retire making bringback papers.
