Of course I would have to turn it in to BATFE...

As nice as it would be to actually own one, it wouldn't be worth my freedom...

I hope it is "legal" and on the NFA registry and has been reported stolen... so maybe the rightful owner would get it back.

...But somehow I have a feeling that isn't the situation here.--

This is probably an "incident" that was prevented from happening by this discovery...

It would be interesting to see the gun. SWD did make a true pistol, no folding stock and of course semi only. And given the propensity of today's "news" men and women to inflate a story just a tad, I'm wondering...
All stories are more intersting if they involve a deadly Assault Rifle rather than a hunting rifle.

Or it was a grandfather on their way to visit their grandchildren and forgot it was in their bag, so they left it behind

Note - 'even operable' Its probably a training gun for their guards during practice runs.

Has anyone ever seen a Replica....or even a demilled version of the French Foreign Legion Sub Machine Gun....the MAT-49.....I saw one for sale last year on a site for over...$25,000......would love to just have a Replica........even a Resin Model...........just wondered if anyone has ever run across one...........Danke......Hans Fischer

Whats nice about these is the receiver is left intact and the barrel and bolt are altered so it cant not be fired; alas, you can't get it state side due to BATFE restrictions.

Just thought I'd post it to let you know they are out there. If that other MAT was 25 grand it must have been transferable operational gun and not demilled.

Judging from where it was found, it is probably a mob "Hit" weapon from the 1970s. No Airport Security office would be storing an issue weapon up in the rafters. It would be in a locked storage area. It could also be something an airport worker stole and hid until he could figure out how to get it home.
Back in that pre 9/11 era all those areas were easily accessible, (especially with a little "grease money" and in NYC!). Perhaps this weapon was "staged" for a hit on someone flying in. The hit never took place and it was forgotten up there.
As others have said, a photo would go a long way to identifying what it is. Is there a suppressor with it?, (usually the case). Is it serial numbered? Blank flats were easely accessible from the beginning of the gun's design and so were parts kits. Any underworld armorer could build a full auto gun and suppressor for the mob they belonged to. Hits in the 80s here in Miami involved hitting your guy, placing the gun on the body and walking away. No evidence to tie you to the hit, once you got away clean. They could be bought outright for under $200.

I own both an original Gordon Ingram MAC 10, with Mitch Wherbel can and two consecutively numbered Sarah and Wayne Daniels M11/9s, I got at the divorce auction. They had them there on pallets for lower than $50 apiece, depending on how many you bought. Needless to say, we all kick ourselves today for not buying more of them.
I don't shoot them much anymore due to the price of ammo, but also, as a lefty, it is unpleasant due to backblast out the ejection port when using the can and also having hot brass flying right by your right eyebrow and occasioanlly connecting.
