Default Washington Monument Repairs

I thought you all might like to see this historic photo of scaffolding all the way up the Washington Monument so they can make repairs to damage suffered during the 2011 Virginia Earthquake that occurred on August 23, 2011, at 1:51 pm. I was at work about 6 blocks from the monument when the earthquake occurred. We had to evacuate our building like most federal buildings because of the tremors...

It has taken several months just to erect the scaffolding… I pass the monument every day on my way to and from work in DC. It has been interesting to watch the “growth” of the scaffolds.

Most people are not aware that work on the original monument was stopped for years, then resumed. That is why the base is a different color than the balance of the structure.

I believe it is also the world tallest granite structure.
