Positive vendor report

Got a real nice 1918 Erfurt today from Gil Hoffman at G&G Relics. It was exactly as advertised. He was recommended by a friend who also has had good luck with him. Not cheap but that's life. I'm filling a few gaps in a small collection and can't wait for deals on everything--did get a complete T97 Jap sniper scope rig for $500 last month, tho. Did I mention the excellent all original complete G33/40 I also got for $500? Included the Luftwaffe belt and buckle the German was wearing at the time of his demise.

He has a periodic list with a lot of other military stuff. Has holsters, mags, tools, etc.

Sounds nice. That is always funny, was in Winterhaven for a job months ago, and never knew this guy existed.

The G33 sounds nice, esp with the "extras".

It took me 35 years to get that gun-I used to do farm work for the guy who brought it home-he took it of a paratrooper in France-also got the bayonetI got a drilling with it too-but more than $500.

there is still a lot more of this stuff in attics than you would think. the Jap scope was about a mile down the road from this.

I know of three different lugers in my hometown that went up in housefires and one that was buried by a vet's mother who didn't want him having it around.

Mike,

I agree that Gil has some nice pistols and I have bought a number from him in the past. He is not the lowest priced, but his pistols are always as advertised. His wife Ginny is a super lady also. When I would call, I usually would talk to Ginny longer than Gil. I also highly recommend Gil as a dealer as he is HONEST!

As an update to my post, I have had an e-mail from another collector who has had some very experiences with Gil in the past. I was surprised to hear this, but maybe not unexpected. I have had a couple of bad dealings with dealers, but most have been very good about returning the pistol for exchange or a refund. It is very frustrating to wait on a pistol that you want and need, then when it arrives, it is not correct. One time may be OK, but when it happens again, there is a problem with that dealer. I guess I have been lucky and only had a few problems with what I ordered. The dealer was called, explanied the problem, and they said return the pistol. I just hate having to pay the cost of the extra shipping!

A number of years ago, some of the top Luger collectors in Europe ordered pistols and the exporting took close to a year for them to get the pistol. When it arrived, it was NOT as advertised and there was a big "Flap" over this and caused some very hard feelings. This caused many folks in the US to lose some valuable resources on Lugers. I have ordered from a number of dealers and only a few problems; maybe I am a lucky one, but I always figured that they were in busines to sell pistols and sometimes they can make a mistake too.

I feel that we need to report any problems if a situation is not rectified by the dealer, but we must be careful what is posted on the Forums with all the "sue-itess" today. I want to make a suggestion that may help with dealers. Since we have a "Links & Resource" section, and the dealers listed should be honerable. If there is a major problem with one, why not have a contact with one of the Board members by personal e-mail, explain the problem, and a decision from the Board if that dealer is to stay listed on the Forum. This may be more of a problem and very difficult to control. Does anyone else have any ideas so we can only have honest and reputable dealers listed on the Forum?

What about an additional link sort of like the customer rating system on Ebay? Ask the webmaster to set up a 1-10 rating system with appropriate comments and the email address of the rater and seller so that details could be discussed outside the forum.

Hi Roadkill....

In short - to have a formal "rating system" - the transaction must have occurred within this site AND be tied back to a specific transaction within that same site. This gives both parties (buyer/seller) "notice" that there is a rating system for each transaction. To this point Ã¢?? notice that someone cannot go randomly "rating" either a buyer or a seller within e-Bay on a whim - feedback is linked to a specific transaction by ID of both the buyer and seller.

Even more, if a formalized rating system gets put up on this site (or any site) *without* the transaction occurring within that site - some of the dealers/individuals can be "rated" without their knowledge - circumventing "fair notice" and open the web site for liable claims. That is why e-Bay doesn't potentially get sued for each "negative" rating that is posted - as each rating is tied back to a user profile, transaction and UserID from within e-Bay.

Good information on the "rating system"! Things like that are very easy to get out of hand and involve folks, and the Forum, in lawsuits which we DON"T want and with John watching over us, we will avoid these problems.

My personal opinion is that once you are burned, don't go back to that dealer and don't publish anything that is/cannot be documented. Paper is the best way!

Rating systems can cause a lot more problems than they solve. I would like to think that this forum provides us links to potential resources..and then it is buyer beware. It is above and beyond this forums intent to safeguard any purchases or referrals. There is no implied 'seal of good housekeeping' with a resource link. Not only does this apply to vendors but to opinions that are posted here. "I read it somewhere on the internet" doesn't have a lot of legal or social weight. I support listing resources but rating them is beyond the scope here.
