Any info on a 1900 Mexican Contract

Hi,
I was asked of some information on a Mexican Contract Lugers...

All of the books that i have, only one has a 2 sentences about the Mexican Contract and no details of the specifics .

Is there a way to ID the contract ?

Where there only 1900 models or 1906 models as well ?

Any information will be very much appreciated.

A reference to a book source maybe ?.

"Land of Borchardt" claims serial numbers from 12,800 to 13,000 for Mexican Lugers. There are Russian guns there as well!

#12880 and #12888 are the only two in Dwight's commercial database.

12880 was reported in Kenyon's Gun Report coumn, 12918 was observed in Reno. Add 12712 observed in Phoenix, and 12788 reported only as "Mexican Army."

thanks I do have that book, and that is the only reference i found.

So if one of this Mexican 1900s is to show up at my door , how'd i know it's the one ? And how will you price one, if no one has seen them.

Spanish markings on the barrel ?

Hi Eugene, A 1900 "Mexican Test" Luger is pictured in "Luger: The Multi-National Pistol" by Kenyon and Ellis. It is marked "EJERCITO MEXICANO" in block letters on it's left frame panel. According to the authors, it is one of only three surviving examples. So if one showed up on my doorstep, I'd say ole! Regards, Norm
P.S. Some of the exotic guns in this book have since been discredited.

Some "Contract Luger Experts" do not believe in Mexican contract same way as they do not in Russian contract Lugers.

And frankly after listening to Albert's arguments for his disbelieve on the matter, I tend to agree with him on both counts.

Unless i find more information that is ;0)

Gortz & Sturgess has a reference to the matter and coincides in identifying 2 examples marked "Ejercito Mexicano" on the left side, marking probably made in Mexico SNs 12880 & 12888 ( pages 878 & 881). 12880 is pictured and photo identified courtesy of Robert Simpson.. Apparently the contract was never signed. I would guess that a small batch of about 50 examples for trials was probably purchased around 1903/1905 for evaluation. I am very much on the lookout for hese pistols in local collections.

We have a great deal of information on SN ranges, I would like to suggest that we readdress the Mexican Contract Lugers and see if we can actually see where they might fit in.

Approach this as new research, not an addition to old data.

I am very suspicious of early documented guns but believe that some test guns may actuality be out there.

Pedro Capetillo, an advanced Mexican Collector who has a home on Reforma in Lomas Chapultepec, would be the one collector in Mexico I would ask. It has been years, but the last time I visited Pedro his Luger collection numbered well over 100 choice, unusual variations.
