Default Jims 2nd luger! 1917 erfurt

I posted over on the new member forum about emailing a gent on a luger advertised local. Its a 1917 erfurt, everthing has the #51 except the wood base magazine and the firing pin must be a replacement because there is no number on it. Grips match, I dont know if its been reblued but next to my first luger it looks downright worn out. some pitting on the barrel. BUT it does have a bit more character than my first luger. Sorry about the bad photos, but any information on the pistol will be greatly appreciated! I may have over paid to some, but I bought it as a keeper. Jim

Congratulations on your Erfurt!
The only reason it looks worn out next to your first Luger is because your Erfurt looks to have its original finish and your other gun has most certainly been refinished!
Erfurts in general are hard to find and this looks like a decent gun.

Thank you.
The only thing I can find aside from the magazine is the firing pin isnt numbered. Would this be a replacement pin? Or did these not have the 2 digits stamped on them? thanks again. jim

The magazine is correct for the era but we need to see a closeup of the "Dimple" on the side of the magazine that helps keep the follower in line. This will help determine if it is an Erfurt or DWM.
Your firing pin should be numbered to the gun. Some collectors accept a mismatched or un numbered firing pin as part of the gun's history and will not factor it into the gun's value. For other collectors its a deal breaker.

Im having issues trying to shoot macro or close up with the camera, which side do I need to get a picture of the magazine? Also are both of these considered military lugers? They are both 9mm. jim

On the side opposite the slider/loader button, just below the feed lips, you will see a small dimple pressed into the metal. Is it a clean rectangle or does it have more of a "D" shape to it?

its got a D shape to it. I looked from the outside and its like its embossed D the flat side is on the bottom at about 25-30* angle. there is a stamp on the wood base also on the slider button side. or maybe its just a dent I really cant tell. jim

It is most likely a DWM magazine and not an Erfurt, then.

Both are military issue. We can't comment on whether you paid too much for it...

In any event, Lugers vary considerably in value depending on where you live [geographically] and who/where you bought it from. Also whether you are young and can wait years for a 'good deal' or older and don't have all that many years left...

It also depends on whether you are a strict discerning collector or just an admirer.

As Doug said, Erfurts don't come up all that often. They're usually a good deal no matter what condition...IMHO...

the erfurt was on backpage tucson on and off for a couple of months. Asking price of $900. I finally decided to email the seller when I decided if the price was right, I'd buy it. I didnt want to email the seller just to take up his time and not be serious about buying it. I think it was over a week later I finally get a response, by this time I really didnt care weather I got it or not. But in the 2nd email he said he'd take $750 for the pistol. I was seriously thinking of ordering a non matching luger from Rguns and I figured for about the same price I would have a gun without import marks, mostly numbers matching so we made arangements to meet up and purchase the gun. I did notice the take down latch spring is missing. But other than that Im really happy with it. Compared to my refinished pretty one. The erfurt does have a bit more character to it. jim

some better pics ( I hope) there is a pic of the magazines. Any idea of what the aluminum bottom magazine is? there is no numbers or letters anywhere. The barrel has the crown over RC. I can see how these get so addicting. thanks. jim

anything under 800 for a shooter seems to be a good deal. unless you can troll forums all day everyday and grab the smokin deals 10 seconds after they are posted.

Jim,

Very nice catch at $750 all things considered! I've seen photos of both your pistols and whilst the refinished one is nice, the Erfurt definitely has character.
