My 1916 Erfurt with a WWI bring back story (probably false) has an "Eagle over circled X" marking on the bottom of it's aluminum based s/n matching magazine. Is there a website that explains the German military markings or does someone know what this mark is?

Bill, pictures would be nice. Sounds like a Third Reich proof, where the X is a stylized swastika. The only source for this that immediately comes to mind would be Costanzo's World of Lugers book.

http://www.whog.org/ppk/markings.htm There it was! Half way down the page - mine has a the sub-letter C. So the 1918 bring back story in conjunction with the upstrap holster and this mark means it was in Germany much longer than the story would allow. Thus the axiom - buy the gun not the story! THANK YOU! ![]()
