Default VIRUS ALERT - Long but important

I have had email contact with several menbers of this forum and had your addresses are in my computer. I just recieved a virus alert from my brother and found it on my hard drive (I got it from him). I forwarded the warning to all in my address book but some of you may have not recognised my name or thought it was a hoax. If you have EVER recieved email from smjr@teleport.com please search your C drive for sulfnbk.exe and delete it both from the drive and your recycle bin. It has an ugly black icon if your search does find it.

I am sorry this happened. I have an anti-virus program and it was updated last night but this still got through! I sent a copy of the virus to the company so they can deal with it in future updates. Perhaps you can contact your anti-virus people and ask if your program stops this.

Default Virus Hoax..

Hmm..I have that file (and it does not appear to be a virus by any of my anti-virus software which are current). There is no mention of this as being a virus on any of their news websites. What makes you think that by deleting this file you are eradicating the virus? Why do you think this file is infected? Before advising anyone to delete any files please be sure that you research this carefully. The file sulfnbk.exe is a Microsoft command file for long extension names and is part of Microsoft Windows. It resides in the Windows/command directory. It belongs there and should not be removed. This warning is the result of an email hoax from last Spring. It claimed that this was a destructive virus spread by email and could not be detected by any virus scanning software. Check with www.mcafee.com

Default [FORUM ANOUNCEMENT]

I appreciate your motives Steve, but some time ago I decreed that the forum was not to be used for virus alerts, or discussions. Viruses and the associated hoaxes are so prolific in the PC world that we could easily dedicate enormous bandwidth to it.

This alert that you have posted is a HOAX Steve, please do yourself and everyone else a favour, and research your information before you squander bandwidth and waste everyone's time. Go to Symantec's Antivirus Site http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ where you can research any suspected virus before you "holler". As with all email traffic, the user should take all precautions to avoid viruses, but the only virus messages that should be posted on the forum are warnings about viruses ON the forum itself, which is very rare. If you have questions about viruses, perhaps an email to John Sabato (our resident virus guru) could help.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Default Re: Message to Steve

Steve, the same thing happened to me a few months ago, I thought I was helping and my alert (that someone else told me was an alert) turned out to be a hoax too! I know how you feel! Your heart was in the right place I think! This taught me to read the listing on Norton to make sure it was correct first! ~Thor~
