I wanna Luger!

Hi there.

I've read about Lugers in a book, as well as on Wikipedia, and I'm interested in the "Long '08" artillery model (long barrel, tangent leaf rear sight). It seems like I nice gun, and I have a few questions:

Exactly how accurate is the artillery model?
How does accuracy compare with more common 9mm pistols (Beretta 92, CZ 75, etc.)?
What is it's maximum effective range?
What companies and nations have/are manufacture/ing it?

And most importantly, how much does it cost and where can I buy it?

I mostly want one for practical use (target shooting, hunting, etc), collector value matters little to me, so if it's a repro It's fine with me.

So, really really needed is an Artillery with shoulder stock board. With that, I felt it's more accurate than my Yugo M48 at 100 yards (!!! but that's true, unbelivable)

No intention to re-open a old topic.... A collector directed me to an ATF pdf doc (2007), saying only original stock can be legally attached. That stock is not cheap.

Without stock, it still bangs but I could not hit a thing.

Not only original one is viewable, it's shootable. If target shooting is the purpose, not gunsmithing, getting a great one is necessary.

Hello Phillip, LP08s have not been made since 1918. My LP 08 artillery ( Arty ) is a 1918 DWM. It is a numbers matching, nicely refinished example. The refinishing means that a true collector would put it back on the table. Mine is what they call a "Shooter". I paid $1500 for it and am HAPPY. If you want a collectible quality example double that figure. Google Simpsons LTD Lugers and you will see what high-end retail has to offer ( at least they have a good reputation ). Other than that you just have to get lucky and keep you nose to the ground. Post a Want To Buy on this forum. Read the back threads and learn all you can. People here are very helpful. Good Luck!! Not very important in this context. But Mauser delivered some commercial Artillery to Persian in 1936. Those are rare.

Phillip, welcome to the forum.

To compare a LP08 to a modern high capacity pistol is not really fair. Sort of an apples to oranges. The ones you will find are very old and a newly manufactured modern firearm will probably outshoot them in the accuracy department. But the Luger has them beat hands down for the cool factor.

You will not find any LP08 being currently manufactured. I think the last one was a special edition manufactured by Mauser in the mid to late 80's. An excellent site with LP08 info is The Artillery Luger by Mauro Baudino. This has the info on the last commeratives by Mauser and the history of this specific pistol. DWM was the primary manufacturer.

If you want a shooter you need to keep an eye out on the for sale forum on this board and Gunboards.com. You can also search for them on Gunbroker.com

The price on these can vary, you can see what retail pricing goes for on the Simpson Ltd site. Good luck in your search.

Phillip, gunbroker has them.

But you might want to read about them before jumping in the water. A long barreled luger might fit your bill too.

Alvin, a repro stock IS legal with the appropriate gun, i.e. artillery repro stock with a artillery, a navy repro stock with a navy.

Post a WTB ad in the forum. I acquired a few items from members here, and worked fine for me.

Pickup first few Lugers from gunbroker.com is dangerous. Many people here are Luger experts, they can do it. New guys.... better be more conservative.

This is old news. ATF has since resinded these rulings and are allowing correct replicas of the designated stocks to accompany historical pistols.

Arties shoot nice. Especially with the shoulder stock. In hand, I find them a bit awkward. A six inch barrel, by comparison is very handy. This is just my opinion. YMMV. There are available, Interarms Mausers in 6 inch for around $12-1500. Some, like mine, need the magazine springs worked on though. There are folks on this forum who can do that. So before investing in an expensive antique, I'd suggest looking at the Interarms that are available.
