Default unit marking on a 1921 dwm

hi there,

got a 1921 dwm, s/n 8xxxx (5digits, no suffix) with an unit marking
S.A.5.F.28.

has anybody an idea about its meaning?
as far as i know during this time no unit markings should have been done during that time (new order in 1922 then).
its a bit dubious for me.
besides it is reblued, gun seems not to be a fake.

thanks
klaus

Guten Tag Klaus,
does your Luger have a sear safety?

I'm sure someone with more knowledge about markings will share their wisdom, for that it's worth, I'm guessing a Prussian police luger.

btw. what does "Extra Bavariam nulla vita, et si est vita, non est ita" mean?

Hi Klaus,

Without being able to see it. I think it is a Reichswehr marking for:

Sanit¤ts Abteilung 5 Fahrpersonal weapon #28

Can you post some clear photos of the pistol?

What are the proof marks on the right side of the received?

Ron

hi ron

proof marks are not clear to recognize

good to see is : "dove" "dove" "eagle"
what letters and numbers is only a guess

on the breechblock the "dove" has a "waa4"

im not sure, but i think, an i@*!t had polished the gun, before it was blued again, cause the stamps are so hard to recognize.

i will try to make a few pics then

regards klaus

Klaus,

Dove WaA4 proofs would indicate 1921 production. It does sound like it has been refinished.

ron,

yes, i think so too.
my opinion cause this version is not so easy to find:
better a bad (refinished) one than none for the collection

only the unit stamp makes worries, cause it does not fit to the order from 1923

pics will follow...

regards
klas

Extra Bavariam nulla vita, et si est vita, non est ita

I don't know if I agree totally, but germany and bavaria has a soft spot in my heart (although along with the Netherlands, I lived there for 7 years )

We'd love to see pictures, esp of the marking!

Welcome to the forum, in case I did not say that when you first arrived.

Ed

Klaus,

I'm still not sure of which order you are refering to. I have six Reichswehr 1921 unit marked Lugers. Reichswehr unit marked Lugers are kind of scarce. Only approx. 8-10 thousand were procured by the Reichsheer.

ron,

im reffering to the instruction from 1922.
your unit stamps showing all the "/" in their syntax
so it is correct.
company/regiment.weapon-nr

the stamp of my luger shows the unit stamp, how it is made during ww1:
regiment.company.weapon-nr

and this is, what i do not understand: the old syntax, which is used.

regards klaus

Klaus,

Not all Reichswehr (post WWI) unit marks have the /. Yours is correctly applied and is legitimate.

All of my 1921s have 4 digit serial numbers without a letter suffix or with an a or b suffix. Yours is one of the mysterious 5 digit S/Ns with the 8 added.

There have been discussions on this in the past. I think the general thought is that the 8 was added after some type of refurbishment or rebuild.

Ron
