Hello Matt,

I have bought two Lugers from Bob Simpson and was totally satisfied. I had many conversations with Bob Simpson by telephone and e-mail. Bob was courteous and answered all my questions. On my trip to Colorado in 2000, I made a little sidetrip to Galesburg. The 1/2 hour I spent in his Luger Room remains memorable. If they find a Vickers for me, I will most likely purchase it from Simpson Ltd.

Regards, Wolfgang

As with any dealer, you must make your own judgement of condition. I am seeing rarer pistols that are very overgraded, and percent finish is percent finish irregardless of age or rarity of the pistol.

Johnny,

You are so right! When I purchase a Luger before seeing it, I always assume that it will be at least 1-2 percentage points worse than advertised. One dealer I have delt with that provides pistols that to me are 1-2 percentage points better than advertised is Syd Rachwal. I have purchased sight unseen from him many times; as a matter of fact, i bought one from him when I was in Saudi Arabia and did not get home to see it for a couple of months. As expected, it was better than advertised. I have visited Syd at his home a number of times and he takes care of his firearms also.

Johnny Peppers points out the pitfalls of judging conditions of guns. I find it difficult to be objective. If I really desire a specific Luger, how subjective is my judgment? For some guidance, I have used the â??Photo Percentage Grading Systemâ? found in Blue Book of Gun Values. It has helped me with my indecisionâ??s irrespective of the next person thinking I am nuts. One thing is for sure, as soon as I pay for a Luger and take possession, in my mind, subjectively, it goes up a point and I tell my wife what a good deal I got.

Does Syd have a website? Catalogue? Sounds like I need to get to know him.

I have only been buying Luges since March. Bought two at gun shows -- my first purchases -- and that was a mistake. Bought one shooter from a local gun shop, which worked out o.k,, but pricey. Bought two from Ralph Shattuck, with whic I've been very satisfied both in terms of meeting his description and price.

Don,

Syd does not have a website, but he does have a listing that is sent out about every 3-4 months. Currently, I do not have access to his telephone number and I won't be back home for another week or so. Maybe someone else could post it for you. Syd is another of the good dealers that you can trust. His Luger inventory usually is 7-10 pieces and most are fairly common type.

Also, we may need to list his number on the Links & Resources section of the Forum, along with his son Dave Rachwal who is a dealer in grips and magazines. Both guys are very honest. Can someone get the numbers added?
