Post Ammo Import

I have a couple of old ammo boxes I'd like to ship in the US to a fellow collector.

Does ammo need ATF approval to get in or can I simply ship it by Courrier labeling it as Small Arms Ammunition??

Thanks for the info...

Hi Kid, if you have just the boxes (without any ammo) that should be no problem for shipment to the US. If the ammo is present, that's a different story. I do know we can't ship ammo via the Postal Service, but can use common ground transportation.

I'm reasonably sure the ATF has rulings regarding the importation of ammo, so I would get the the regulations before any shipping!!

Hello Frank,

Thanks for the info. I'll check with ATF first...and advise accordingly...

I think it has to start the other way. Your friend, or his dealer, has to file a form to import the ammo. Then, you have to find out if Canada has restrictions on exporting it and follow those rules.

These things get ridiculous, and I really doubt Osama bin Laden would be deterred a bit by laws banning the import of a couple of boxes of old ammo.

Hello Kid,

Collectible ammunition can be shipped in the US by UPS Ground delivery as long as it is properly declared as small arms ammunition. If the ammunition entering the US from a foreign country, then it will require an ATF Form 6 to import it into the US.

I hope this answers your question.

Good luck,
Albert
