P.08 Luger

I have a Luger as far as I have been able to learn was brought from Germany in 1943, which it is alleged my Dad bought for $35.

The grips were faded and chipped and to my regret he replaced with some white plastic grips available in the 1950's. Now they had shrunk and warped.

The pistol is original with the same serial number on all parts. The whole serial number is 5397.

Can anyone out there steer me to a source for some decent replacement grips. I know all this devalues the gun. But I have shot it and would like for it to be passed on in better shape.

Do a search on the forum, I saw one member advertising replacement grips that looked good. Anything but the originals effect value IMHO but it all depends on what you want the gun for. By the way it appears to be in excellent shape otherwise so it looks like you have a real winner. Some of the others can probably tell you for sure but I don't know if those BYF's ever had the grips marked to the gun anyway.

I'm lost. From the description, this gun was bought by your Dad in Germany as an officer's sidearm. I assume he came to the States post WWII and the pistol came with him? How?

My Dad bought this from a Man who had picked it up while visiting Germany. He showed it to my Dad and Dad just had to have it much to my Mother's chagrin.

There were ways to bring guns back in the 1950's and even up to now. A GI stationed there could buy, register it and bring it back. There were times where lugers could be bought at the Rod and Gun club (I did not have any where I was stationed).

So, point is, lots of ways to have guns brought back. :0

A new set of grips or old ones in wood or black plastic plus an FXO magazine could be purchased fairly easily and put it back to normal.

It looks like the Luger was dolled-up a bit by the GI that sold it to your Dad, as the magazine isn't original to a byf either. Also, is the pistol still blued or is it in the white or chromed?

Anyway, for an excellent set of walnut German made (current production) grips, google a firm named NIL Grips. They are in Germany, but I've bought several sets from them. They aint cheap, but they are of high quality and are perfect replacement grips for a Luger pistol!!

I'll Google NIL grips and see what comes up! Thanks. It has the original factory blue but has worn spots where it was carried in a holster. May have seen lots of action.

Again for some reason Dad thought the grips need replacing as well as the end of the magazine. He went cheap and according to his friend who told how Dad got the pistol said he got those horrid Franzite grips back in 1950.

Dad died in 1959 and I was lucky to get the information on where he got the Luger. The information came from a friend of Dad's who kept a journal throughout his life and had written about it. The man who brought it from Germany, I have no information on.

Brownell's sells their "vintage" grip line which includes black plastic grips which closely resemble the original bakelite grips on this byf41.

Bllvit, I agree with John S. above, that the black plastic repro grips would be more appropriate for your 41 BYF, than a repro wood set. I have either type (not the NIL quality) available @$25/set + $6 S&H. hellerarms@webtv.net

Wow Steinar! Only $165.00 !!! That's a bargain in today's market... You are a heck of a nice guy! ( and I am not being fecetious either!) A decent set of grips could easily reach $250-300 depending on how badly the buyer wants them...

I don't think they are worth any more.. They are not rare enough to justify these insane prices we see every now and then.

Blivit; is there a suffix under your serial number?

Hi

I believe the letter suffix along with the serial number would help determine which grips are correct for the 41-byf. For example, if the pistol were in the - w - block wood SE-655 grips would work. If the pistol was in the no suffix a or b blocks SE-135 would fit. If the pistol were assembled after June of 1941 either black plastic or wood would be correct. Good luck.
