? ON 1937 Mauser-Pics added
Quick question guys, I have a 1937 mauser serial # 860 with what looks to be a lower case cursive L, my questions are, would un-numbered grips be correct, and is this late enough in the year to be all blued with no straw?

Mauser 1937date S/42 code Lugers were not manufactured by Mauser in the "L" block. The reported serial range is 4500p-8xxb. There are tables on this Forum translating the letter suffixes. Below is some information on 1937 dated S/42 code Lugers. I am tracking information on Mauser Lugers and would be interested in any other information you have. Jan *1937- S/42 (4500p-8xxb) The change from strawed small parts to all blue small parts occurs below serial number 1860t and above serial number 1291u. The frame hump was added between 595s and 6902s. Both strawed and blued small parts are found in the range from serial number 6902s and 1860t. All 1937 S/42 code Lugers above serial number 1291u (sn 6835 is an exception) are all blued. The change from polished inside to blued inside and from heat treated to blued pins happens at the same time the finish changes from strawed to all blue. RIGHT RECEIVER ACCEPTANCE STAMPS DE63- DE63 MTP (both sm) (4500p-4032y) DE63- SE63 MTP (both sm) (4147y-9511z) SE63-SE63 MTP (367-8xxb) GRIPS: wood, majority matched (13 of 18 matched) MAGAZINE: Mostly crimped blued with the same acceptance stamps (approximate) as found on right receiver. SIDE PLATE INNER NUMBER: Most side plates bear an inner number. Most of these numbers are a match for the first two digits of the serial number. |

Thanks for the response Jan, I just looked at my serial number again, and I am stumped. In comparison with the chart I felt it could be an e if not a l like I originally thought, but then I re-read your post, and found that could not be so.
I took of my sideplate, and the number 17 was in there. My daughter lost our card for our digital camera, but we will have a replacement this week, if you want I will send you some pictures? |

Please post your photos here for the entire forum to see. The education factor is a primary reason for the existence of this and Jan's forum. Thanks.

Thank you John, for your kind words, and for posting the pictures for a computer-challenged person such as myself.
So, I believe you are correct about the b, and according to Jan's information, that would make it one of the last 1937's? Do you guys think the grips are original, even though they are not numbered? Is there any more information you need Jan? Thanks for the help guys, and any comments are welcome. |

Mauser
1937 S/42, sn 860b?, SE63 SE63 MTP, parts blue. Thanks for the excellent photographs. The grips with a SE63 and S/42 acceptance stamps appear correct. With SE63 the small parts should be blued. This may be the last 1937 S/42 reported. A few questions. What are all the letters and numbers on the bottom of the barrel? A "P3" seems to show up in your photograph where the barrel gauge should be: 8,82-8,85. What is the number on the left receiver? What are the rest of the parts numbers? Thanks Jan |

The number on the left receiver is 860. All of the parts, extractor, firing pin, toggle, trigger, sideplate, takedown lever etc. are marked 60, even the toggle pin is marked 60. The one exception, that was the topic of a previous post by me is the hold open which is unfortunately is labeled 64. I do not know how to check the ejector, but I hope it is 60.
The takedown lever does almost look over-stamped on the 6, but aside from that all the numbers, and letters are very crisp, along with all of the edges, which is why I bought it. I will take another look underneath my barrel tonight when I get home, and tell you what I can make out. Thanks for all the information on my luger, its kind of cool to know I have, at least one of the last lugers made in 1937, and to think when I initially called on it I was disappointed because it was not one of the early 1937 that were strawed. |

Jan, Here is the best magnification I could get (from the photos posted already) of the numbers under the barrel. The first letter is definitely a "P" but the second one could be a "5" or a "3" or even an "8" or "9"... They don't look the same age as the bore diameter (8.81) marking to me... but that could also just be the photo...
Perhaps 'mauser' could rephotograph this area in better light and sharper focus...
