#6 byf 41

This is my latest Luger byf 41.
All matching incl. magazine but with a replacement barrel.
The receiver has a more into red colur (?), but with the proper markings.
Would apreciate any inputs

I find single digit SN# pistols to be fascinating,can I assume this means that this was the 6th pistol made that year since there is no letter suffix.

Steinar.. Nice byf41. I have a byf 41 that has a reddish colored receiver. According to Jan Still This resulted from " the hardness of the receiver and failure to maintain the proper temperature or chemical strength" Apparently this only happened on the receivers. Bill

The 6 with no suffix does not mean it was the 6th Luger made that year. They continued from where they left off the previous year.

Tracey is quite right, WWII Mauser production was sequenced differently from WWI DWM and Erfurt--check Still's Third Reich Lugers, p.16.

Actually, any part could end up "plum" colored. I have observed plum extractors and ejectors; go to the "Old Owner's Corner" on the home page black bar, and check out Thor's (Ted Green's) "Plum S/42" for a Luger which is almost completely plum.

Really neat pistol Morgan... I have a AC-44 P-38 that has a plum color over most of the gun.. I heard this was a problem with the blueing?

Thanks for the input.
I also assumed the reddish colour came from something that went 'wrong' during production, perhaps due to a startup of a new bulk ..who knows..

I find the early serial number to be kinda neat, still, all Lugers are unique in their own way. I didn't pay more for it to be that low in #, it came as little bonus

At least the frame, bits and pieces is #6.. not sure about the upper (sear is missing)

Hi Steinar, nice gun! I Like'em that way.. I like the byf's also... they have always been my favorite since I started collecting ... I just can't decide which I like best.. 41's or 42's... I think 41's were still a bit better fit and finish then 42's... maybe like the P.38's, late 41 was a turning point in quality control... anyway, nice gun Steinar, and as always, best to you, til....lat'r....GT

You have a very nice byf41 and I really like the single digit ser#. I have a byf42 and the only plum part is the ejector

Thanks. Plum colour on the ejector would be right on your Luger. I find the byf's very well made and tight.

Interesting gun and serial number. I had to go check my two matching byf 42's, their extractors were both black. My 1938 S/42, however, has the plum-colored extractor.

Balder, both are right I guess, depending on the production bulk of the extractors. But most I have seen, has a slight plum color.

Nice pistol Steinar. I've got a 1939 Code 42 that has a purple receiver and was surprised last year to find an Eagle C proofed Walther PP that was purple too. The serial number of the PP dates it to 1942, so I guess the effect shows up randomly through the years.

DCCUK, in short.. you would have be an active shooter or a registered gun collector to purchase pistols. being a registered gun collector you can purchase as many guns you want within your limited area of collection. The house must then be approved in various ways by police. -it is not easy to become a collector. As a shooter, you can only have one pistol in the area of competition one is active in.. Two simular 9mm would be impossible/hard to register. If not documented active shooter for some years, pistols must be turned in.
