I was just looking at one of my Lugers and thinking about the serial numbering used. Since the major parts like the frame, receiver, takedown lever, safety lever, extractor, middle and front toggle links, firing pin, and the lowly holdopen are serial numbered; why is the breechblock not serial numberd? I realize it has the test proof stamp, but this is to assure funtion. Why did the Heereswaffenamt not require checks of the breechblock? This certainly seems to be a critical part in the pistol. Does anyone on the Forum know an answer to this question?

Marvin,
I thought they were all serial numbered under the firing proof, at least on the militaries. What Luger are you looking at? |

I agree, all the matching military PO8 that I've seen do have the last two digits of the serial on the left side just below the test eagle. Commerical will usually have a crown over N, either in this location or on the left side of the mid link. Commerical BBs with also have an assembly (not same as s/n) number on the back, usually to the left of the firing pin retainer.

You will not believe this, but I have not looked in that area for a number! Please don't drum me out of the Luger Forum for this dumb mistake. Like I said, this was a dumb question.
I will take a look this weekend at my pistols for the serial number on the breechblock. Thanks for the info guys! Boy, do I feel stupid Marvin |

Marvin, look in Lugers at Random under serial placement, you will see we are not all nuts, there usually is a serial number (2 digit) there. Looking at your pistols will also confirm it, you may have to take the toggle train out like you would to clean the pistol to see the number.

This is crazy to me, I had never seen this before and that is the reason I said this was probably a dumb question and it was, but I have learned something!

Wonder how many of your "all matching Lugers" have a mismatched breech? Just kidding! THOR

There is no such thing as a dumb question! Dumb answer...sometimes but never a dumb question. Human frailties get all of us at some time or other, and as all us old guys know....time is the equalizer!!!

When I got home this afternoon, I pulled several Lugers from the vault and looked at the breechblock. Sure enough, the number was there and matched the pistols. I don;t remember having noticed this anbd if I did, i don't remember, but the number is there.
Thanks for all the responses to this "dumb" question which I should have know so easily. Marvin |

Sometimes We can see the Forrests for the trees. Someone will ask me about a part I have looked at a million times and I find there are somethings about it that are missing in my pea brain! Dont fell bad, know you have something "new" to be excited about and look for! I have one that has a "50" where it should be and another number 81 on one end! GO FIGURE!
