OT - "And He SCORES!!!""
Someone *really* should put an Off-topic discussion area for these kind of posts. I'll see if I can't speak to the "management" and get it to happen HOWEVER...
I was doing another circuit change this AM, and in the middle of it, I got a phone call from a friend who told me "he just saw a terrific P 38 Rig" at a local gun store. Hmmmm.. The phone call was about the same time Orv posted his "Gun Laws" on the P-38 Forum Discussion Forum ( http://www.p38forum.com ) ... So - I finished up as quick as I could - and headed out to the store, about 30 minutes away... Well - my buddy can't tell a P-38 worth a damn. BUT - what was there was a WW2 Vet bring-back Hi-Power RIG. All original, matched - and was obviously a field piece. The holster (pig skin) is in VG shape. The pistol itself has about 50% blue, one correct mag (the other mag is old, but not correct). I've been looking for one of these for a long time - as a field/battle RIG that was NOT stored in a desk drawer by someone. So I now own it. Orv's words were ringing in my ears from his thread on the P-38 Forum where he posted today "..I have never regretted buying a gunâ?¦just the ones I did not buy, or have sold.." Damn you Orv - I couldn't be happier!!! Thanks!!! John D. |

OK John D., the question is obvious. How many times have you bought this one?????? Are you sure you even know?????? How did you find your way home????
Congrats, they are very nice pistols. You might also take a look at the Inglis. They too are great little pistols!! |

Hey Frank..!!!!
As far as I know - it's the first time!! Fact - I kept writing me checks 'till I had enough $$ for the purchase Seriously - this one is a keeper. I've attached a photo below. As well - I saw an Inglis recently that had a Chinese mark ("CH" - but no stock though) that would have been a great addition as well. Right now, this HP is taking it's place in my display cabinet - and it seems right at home. However - the photo below isn't the best for color, as the holster is a dark-dark brown, and the HP looks better (you can't really see the freckling/wear)... But - I really like it!!! My Thanks!!! John D., I have one of each. A WWII German Hi Power and a late model Inglis and it's difficult to tell the difference, except for the finish and the rear sight ramp on the Inglis. If I weren't a Luger Nut, I would certainly be a Browning Hi Power Nut, or maybe I already am. A Browning Hi Power Nut I mean. I know, some will say I already am a Nut!!

John D.,
I don't mean to rain on you parade, but your holster is pebble grain impressed leather. It is probably smooth on the inside; if it was pigskin it would not be smooth. However, the holster that you have is one of the rarer types. You don't see many like this very often. What is the maker mark and date? You'll have to look really close as these sometimes are hard to read because of the pebblegrain. Looks like you got yourself a nice rig. Regards, SteveM |

John D, Excellent find! The holster is particularly stunning. To find a pebble grain in this condition is indeed rare. They were much more fragile than a high quality hide.
Another interesting item. Your holster is configured with the Police style closure. The Army type has the stud on the lower foldover flap and the strap attached to the top. The Police type was faster to open and access. Jerry Burney

Hi Folks..!!!
Thanks Ed..! Also - Frank, all of us are nuts - why else would we be here??!!! Frankly (Frank ) - it's great to meet another HP nut (it's only my second - so I have my HP addiction firmly under control.. I think??? Oh well..! Also - this one has the correct serial # for the second run of 100,000 with the "a" suffix (the serial number is 93,???a (it's in the house and I'm at the office Jerry and Steve - Thank you!!! Both of you are absolutely right. Steve, yes - it sure is smooth on the inside (can you tell I am not a holster guy? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> As well, on the back it is marked: j k h (all lower case) 4 (I don't believe there is a number after the "4" - if there is, perhaps a very feint top of what looks to be a "7" or "3" or "1" - or it's the pebble-grain playing with my old eyes, as its not nearly as deeply stamped (if at all) as the "4"?) Jerry - my thanks! I haven't touched it with anything, for fear of hurting it. However, it is in excellent condition. The only small area that appears to be "restitched" (about 3/4" maybe?) - is at the very base where the bbl rests. It is crudely done without any intention to make it look "factory". It appears to be a white cotton thread of considerible age. Other then that, it's really in terrific condition.. Thanks for all the input and suggestion! Steve and Jerry, and additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated..!! |

A little more.. I believe I just found the maker "jkh":
Karl Busse, Fabrik f¼r Ausr¼stungen aus Stoff u. Leder, Kurf¼rstenstr. 11, Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz (Source: Claus ESPEHOLT (Denmark) , Michael HEIDLER (Germany) and Liviu STOICA (U.S.A.)). Apparently, they mfg.ed HP holsters in 1943. I'm trying to decipher what else they made from the other codes in my cross references... |
