Any of ya'll ever had any experience with this? I've got a few military 30.06s I don't shoot too often cause ammo ain't cheap but this might be an option, especially the 7.62X39.

I have never heard of this but it seems reasonable.
After all the diameters of the bullets being interchanged are the same.

Yes, I've heard of these but never used them. Do you want a permanent conversion? From the writeup, they evidently stay in the chamber and may be real hard to remove if you want to go back to 30-06.

I have an erma/erfurt .22 subcalibre device for a 98k mauser (8mm) and the .22 subcalibre device for my hk93. Both of these are complete units which replace the bolt and chamber assembly and magazine (and in the case of the mauser, the insert runs the length of the barrel as well). Once I owned a Navy Garand that had been converted from 30-06 to .308 by means of a chamber insert. These inserts were available from a company in Idaho several years ago. The insert appears to be like the one in the link and consisted of a ring that reduced the shoulder length of .30-06 to the .308 and was tacked in place to prevent possible expulsion with a spent cartridge (a MUST with auto fed rifles). I would only recommend a competent gunsmith install or remove such a device. Currently, the Isreali 30-06 ball surplus has been pretty cheap. It is excellent ammunition and meets or exceeds NATO and US Govt. spec. and is about 1.25 MOA in my NM '03. I have also heard great things about a company called Ã¢??Georgia AmmoÃ¢?Â or something like that, that remanufactures inexpensive high quality ammo (a friend is supposed to get me some of their .308 match which he swears is .25 MOA).

Maybe I'm scratching a dog on the wrong end. My objective is to shoot some of my large caliber guns more often without having to alternate which days my dogs get to eat. ("Sorry Buster, can't feed you today, going shooting. Go catch the neighbors damn cat.")

The inserts idea was a means to do that. Mr. Trigger643 referenced a good deal on ammo. There are lots of us with similar interests and different sources of information. Pending Forum Adminstrator's approval, why not post ammo deals in the "Gun Show Forum"? We all know how it feels to spend $ on what we think is the best deal then find out it wasn't so good after all. The post would include shipping amount and total cost per round.
No dealers, no promotions, members posting only.

road kill, look at gunbroker.com (forthehunt.com), battlerifles.com, cheaperthandirt.com for your ammo needs. I purchased some isreali .30-06 off of gunbroker for $50 / 1,000 rounds.

As this is the Luger forum, I would suspect these folks, and me included, are pretty much interested in the weapon itself and not so much geared towards finding the fodder to feed it, though there is a shooting forum in this group.

By the way, In my Lugers, P-38s, my Sig 210s and other vintage 9mm weapons, I only shoot 115 gr. US mfg. FMJ. In my collector weapons I try to limit my their abuse with the closest to original spec ammo I can find. Over the years I've tried to limit the calibre of the guns I own, too. 230 grain ball for my .45's, 150 gr. ball for my .30-06 and .308s or 168 gr. match ball, etc. Most of my closet is either 9mm, .45, .30-06, .223 or .308.
