Post Cleaning Luger Grips

Members,

Has anybody discovered a safe way to clean Luger grips to safely remove dirt, oil or grease without damaging the color or finish of the grips? Can a collector use mild soapy water with an old toothbrush to remove dirt and afterwards let the grips dry at room temperature? Any other suggestions?

Probably some collectors will say leave the grips alone because these elements show authenticity, however, I have observed that some dealers carelessly wipe down fine Lugers with dirty and oily cloths staining or discoloring the natural color of the grips.
