I played hooky form work today and went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History. No Lugers, but they have an excellent example of a German Strumgewehr (which I believe is the original â??assault rifleâ?). Anyway, the receiver looked cast not forged. Does anyone know if thatâ??s true? Was that rifle made that cheaply?

BTW, Along with several examples of historic guns (like the brown bess) they also have the stump of a 22â? Oak tree that was literally cut in half by minne balls at Spotsylvania Court House in 1864. Itâ??s my favorite exhibit. If you find your self in D.C. for some unspeakable reason, go and see it!
