Eric, that is the url of the picture on your own hard drive, so if you can get the picture to John D's server it'll show up, , I know figuring this out can be a pain. There is a picture tutorial under the Site Help and Feedback section.

If you still have trouble, send me an e-mail with the picture and I'll post it for you,

Eric, Fascinating photo's. What are some of the details? Matching to barrel? What is the barrel length? Looks to be about 6" ? Anything of interest you have noticed? Jerry Burney

I agree with Jerry, the front of the barrel seems to have been cut off. There isn't a crown on the front of the barrel and the front sight seems to be different (no dovetail). The serial numbers don't match either. The serial number on the rear sight is '79'. The serial number on the left side of the frame in the same picture is difficult to see but I will bet a cold one that the last two digits are not '79'.

Eric et al, I've owned at least half a dozen LPO8s with the shortened (by 1/2") barrels. These were cut off a the rear of the front barrel band and a fixed C96 front sight added. My theory as to why this was done, is that these all originally had the fine tune front sights, which either froze-up or the sight blade and/or adjusting screw were lost. Rather that remanufacturing these parts, this was the easiest method, to put them back into service. TH

But no one has a comment about the Artillery Barrel being installed on a Swiss upper receiver????????

To the best of my limited Luger knowledge (about 40 years worth) The swiss didn't issue any Artillery Models...

Could someone who owns Bobba's book on the Swiss Lugers please verify this?

EricO, just out of curiosity, is the muzzle of the barrel flat or has it been crowned? ...and it is still a great looking Luger...but then I haven't met too many Lugers that I didn't like

Thanks.

John,

Although Bobba does show a photo of a Germany LP-08, no mention of Swiss-issued arties is mentioned.

My guess is this is a parts gun that could possibly have gone to Switzerland and had the swiss cross engraved so it could be used at federal shooting ranges & clubs...

If it were made up with an existing swiss receiver, I think the chamber stamping would be nicer and roll-die stamped.

Another possibility is that this gun was made up in "Waffenfabrik, USA" to look like a swiss artillery to catch the un-suspecting...

Eric; having said all that, I think your gun is lovely and must be a lot of fun to shoot...!

Regards,

Pete...

John,
I did not want to comment on the apparent Swiss receiver because I could not see the little notch that would be cut into the front of the receiver to accomodate the artillery rear sight. Without this notch, the rear sight would ride a tad high. I don't have a Swiss Cross in Sunburst so I could not comment on the placement of the decal on the chamber. But it does seem to be a bit low.

This is just my WAG but I would guess it is a 1920's or so era Swiss rework by a commercial firm/gunsmith. The chamber marking to me does not look engraved, but rather an "aftermarket" die stamp, definitely not an official Swiss Waffenfabrik roll die. I have no documentation or source to substantiate this, just an observation based on the quality of workmanship and overall appearance of the piece. As Lugerdoc has pointed out, this barrel configuration is sometimes encountered and I think he is correct that it is an expedient modification to repair an otherwise serviceable barrel that has suffered front sight/muzzle damage. Again this is just my opinion, so take it with a 5 pound bag of salt.
