Default Simson luger "sunburst" proof?

I've exhausted all my resources and cannot find a clue as to what the "sunburst/star" mark to the left is. The closest I have seen are police marks on magazines but nothing for the frames. Any clues?
Thanks,
Bob

welcome to the forum

1. Do I have your serial number and info on your simson?

2. I am pretty sure that is a east german marking

Hi Ed,
I looked through what I believe is your latest list and did not see mine. The serial number on this one is 7257. I used your amazing book on Simson Lugers as my primary resource and of course, this forum but could find no reference for the "sunburst" mark. From what you say (East German), I can safely conclude it is a post war mark. Thank you for your kind response.

If you would like more information to add this one to your list just do a search on Gun Broker for item "1067141507". The seller did provide really good photos. It's the best I can offer right now since I just bought it and as of today, I am still waiting on it to be shipped. Once it arrives, I will gladly provide any further information about it.
Thanks,
Bob

Ed,
Correction. I just found a newer edition of your list and you do indeed have this one on your sheet. You made a comment that it is not in as pristine as described by the seller. I must say that I have to agree with you there, but I went for it anyway. Hopefully it will be acceptable when it actually arrives. We'll see.

Ed and I discussed this mark previously on that same pistol. IIRC him and Dwight looked at it and concluded it was either an early police or East German marking. That pistol has been sitting for a while, and I think price wise you did fine. Most of the stuff I've bought from OOW has actually been a bit beter than the pictures show. In this case it is hard to tell, because these are older pictures with poor lighting that have been up for a good while. They seem to take much better pictures now.

Now you'll have to find a correct magazine for it. I did ask them some time ago about the grips and if they were numbered to the gun and never received an answer. Again, IIRC, the later grips will have all four digits of the serial number in addition to the E/6 stamp. Will be interesting to see whats up with this one when you receive it.

Daniel,
Thanks for the information. I'm glad you think I did OK with the price, I was thinking I overpaid. I'll have to check the grips when it comes in. I'll let you know.
Again, thanks.

I think you got a nice looking SIMSON luger, with good grips and matching parts.
The finish is rough in some areas, but the strawed parts retain their gold color.
I think you'll enjoy it.

I always look for what Ohio Ordinance Works (OOW) has to offer - I got a couple of very nice ERFURT lugers through them just last year.

If you don't like it, let me know !!

I think you did fine Bob, even if the grips are not original. They started that gun at $3700 quite a while back, and I considered bidding on it at one time when they lowered the price to where you bought it. But I didn't like the fact that they never answered me about the grips (they are usually pretty good about responding to questions). At any rate, I think any time you can get matching Simson in decent shape under $2500 you did well. There are plenty of magazines floating around, but be careful...like anything else 100 years old, some of them have been monkeyed with. Before you buy a magazine, I'd post it up here. Simson also made a number of guns for the police, and you will see there are single police magazines out there. I would get a standard magazine for it, not a police one. Below are pictures of what a good grip and a good magazine base will look like.

Thank you to everyone for all the great feedback. Fedex just came and it does look better in person than through their photos. No one will ever say it's perfect, but it is decent and good enough for my first Simson!
Oh, bonus! The grips match! They are original to the gun.

Thanks again to all that responded.

One more thing, if I'm not pushing it here. What can I expect to pay for a magazine that is condition-wise similar to this luger? Everything I'm seeing out there is $400 - $500. Is that right?

Since there is no hurry here, I would hunt around for a magazine. The $400-500 price tag will get you a magazine, but again, there's no hurry. I wouldn't pay that much for one unless it was correct, matched the gun in condition, and was real close in SN (at a minimum in the same 7xxx block). They are not going to be cheap though.

You may want to put a post in the WTB section when you are able. I think you have to have a certain number of posts here to be able to do that. You may want to check over on the other luger forum as well (if you're not a member there you should be).

Post some more of your own pics when you get a chance, since all we have are the potato pics from OOW. That grip looks great.
