Kid lives not that far away, in the same state, but around 40 minutes of driving. During dinner, he said that he would consider buying a rifle after buying a house. After hearing this, I told him, "No, don't. Save your money on mortgage. Apply a license, I will give you a modern rifle for home protection. I will also give you a few old German pistols, you can give to your kids in future, or you can sell them when you're at my age". Here is the latest "transfer to next gen" items:

On dinner chatting, I told him the story of an old lady donated her husband collection to police without knowing the value of those items and could not get them back, also told him the story of a lady donated a AK-47 like rifle to police, and police told her "This is WWII German, worth some money". He asked a question "What? Was it a STG-44?".... that surprised me, "Boy!! you heard of STG-44, that implies you know old guns better than 95% of population".

It's more restrictive than that. This place is one of most gun-restrictive place in the country. To own firearms need a license here. Even if the gun never leaves home... ownership needs a license. Licensing process itself is not that complex, basically, need to pay $100-$200 to a training school to learn safety for one day, fill an application form, pay another $100-$200 (I forgot exact amount) to government, then, wait a few months for a plastic card.

I tried an alternative way to collect. The simplest way to collect was looking for a nice or rare gun at low price, and acquire it. In theory, collecting is as simple as that. But this brute force way does not work well. My way was slightly different, I used numerous tradings on nice guns to lower my cost. At the end, I probably will keep 10 of them, the average cost is manageable. The down side of this way is the need to perform many transactions and cannot make mistake (at least, cannot make big mistake)... I am not a dealer, this absorbed my spare time and created lots of work on me in the past. So, nothing is free, these can be considered being my hard working result.

Here is another left over. In past transaction experience, American collectors generally collect nice guns, a better sample of this variation with matching stock was sold to another collector, this one stayed.

So Mass requires you to spend between $400-$600 dollars to acquire your first $400 pistol, for a total investment of maybe $1,000? This sounds like restraint of trade. It also affects the folks who most need this protection, the inner city minorities.
