Although the WW2 stuff was largely scrapped, the majority of the modern aircraft being kept at Davis Montham and other desert fields are "mothballed", i.e. being kept in reserve for either reactivation or for spares.

Last night, I saw a travel item on the recycling of airframes and parts.

They've built houses and hotels out of them!

I frequently drive by the aviation boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB and can almost hear these old birds talking to each other, and telling of escapades of years gone by.
