I am trying to help a neighbor out that has a Luger her Dad left her after his recent passing. I know he was an Admiral in WW2. This Luger I think looks great. It has the Bakelite grips. My guess is in 90% condition. I think it is considered a BYF. I just want to give her a ballpark value so that she can add to her insurance. I do not see how to download photos. However if someone can assist me , I can mail photos. THANKS!

Shooters that are mismatched, refinished or otherwise goobered up start around $750. A prestine example of a Mauser (BYF) 41 or 42 might fetch a bit over $2k. Generally we see stuff somewhere in the middle, bringing from $1300 to $1700. If you can figure out posting photos we can try to narrow it down a bit.

Looks like a nice 1941 (year made), byf (Mauser made) luger

A very nice, "Black Widow" rig and it looks like it has all stayed in the same condition in which it was brought back. The magazine is a mismatch but that is a small detail.

Can anybody identify the crest on the belt buckle?

Note the position and size of the tail...I believe that is significant and may make the buckle more likely Hannover. However, I think the thin tail of the Hannover horse is usually more straight and points out more horizontally. Could be a variant design that accommodates the background shield configuration. Doesn't look exactly Hannover or Saxon.

I did a search and found the same crest on the Hannover "mannschaft" buckle.

Could this be fake? And why?

... and more! I found out that this same buckle and crest was also used by the Polizei Niedersachsen Hannover!
Maybe it was general badge for state authorities after the war.

I don't believe either buckle is a fake. I would speculate that the difference between them may be that the one you just found the image of, is an enlisted or lower rank buckle, and the one with the Luger rig in question is a buckle for a much high ranking officer's belt...

Just a little more info from the owner lady when I requested any provenance. "WWII- got it off of a German Col. After surrender on the Rhine river." Also enclosed photo of Buckle back. I do not see any markings.
