Default DWM Luger Unit Mark P. L. 12. 38. XXXX

Gentlemen,
Need some help. What is the Unit? Why is it X'ed out? Why would the chamber date be removed? What year Luger is this?
Nazi era Luger are pretty straight forward to figure out, but these early ones are tough for me, thanks!

The unit mark is for an Landwhehr Pionier Battalion. Unit marks were often crossed out when the weapon changed hands to another unit.
