Erfurt #'s

Hello all.
I have a 1916 Erfurt with a mismatched side plate marked S 80.
The correct number would be 70 to match the serial #.
But, I have seen 1916's with and without numbered side plates.
Which would be correct?
And where to find one?

No Erfurt ever left the factory without a numbered and proofed sideplate. You will need to not only find a number 70, but an Erfurt proofed one at that.

yofo, I do have a vg+ orig finished unnumbered, crown/B marked Erfurt side plate available @$150 or $200 with orig trigger lever & pin. This would be easier for a restorer to number 70 for you, than one with an existing serial. Tom

Doug would not an unmarked one also be technically also uncorrect or were some left that way/ Did some have the last 2 digit on the bottom of the sideplate??

Eric,
No to my knowledge. Erfurt was a goverment arsenal that never made commercial pistols, so numbering other than according to goverment regulation is doubtful.

The problem I have seen with rematched sideplates is the exact alignment of the trigger axle. If the sideplate isn't fitted exactly or the axle anchor is worn the trigger can be sloppy and the pull inconsistant.

An Erfurt with no sideplate number is kinda like a $3.00 bill.

I have an Erfurt side plate never blued, no trigger bar and unnumbered with a nice crisp Erfurt acceptance stamp. They are rare but do exist and did leave the plant.

It left the plant on a gun????? That is really unique. I know I have a lot of them yet to see but at least till now I have never seen a Erfurt without a sideplate number on it.

Or did it come out as a piece? Whole different ball game I think.

Gary, it's obvious that it didn't leave the factory on a finished pistol. I stated that it had never been blued and it has no trigger bar installed.

I apologize for over reacting. My statement was hasty and without proper thought. What I should have said originally was that an Erfurt pistol with no sideplate number is kinda like a $3.00 bill.
