Question About Serial Numbers

On a Luger fresh from the factory, are the numbers on the barrel supposed to match the serial numbers on the front of the receiver? Note: These two sets of numbers are located very close to each other. I just picked up a Luger, the barrel number doesn't match the receiver number. Sorry for what is probably a very basic question to you guys, but I know NOTHING about them and any tidbits of knowledge are appreciated. Thanks.

Hi again , yes all serials should match and the last two digits of the serial should be located on various parts that depend on different circumstances of production. Some war time replacement parts are unnumbered.

Unless you are looking at a number on the bottom of the barrel near the frame, which indicates bore diameter? (8.83)

Number on the bottom of the barrel has 4 digits. Yes, the number is located where the barrel screws into the frame. That number stamped on the barrel is 8348. The number on the frame where the barrel screws in is 25289. In time I will post pics as soon as I learn how. But in the mean time, the piece has the same marking in at least 3 places. It is a capital "N" with what looks like a crown above it. Just for now, can you take a stab at the meaning of the N? Niederlande, or Netherlands?? Thanks.

Not certain of the exact meaning of the N, but "crown N" is synonymous with commercial Lugers. dju

The serial number range is 1906 era, five digit ...

So, all were commercials, and had a crown N

Unless I'm mistaken, cronw N = Nitro-proofed, on commercials.
