Hey everyone I'm new to the forum and hope you can help Id a Luger I have a chance to buy. I was told it is a police Luger but I can't find out which one. It has 42 stamped on the toggle and what looks like a polish crest ( bird) stamped over the chamber where usually the date is stamped. It also has MW/J.R.12.51. on the grip strap. It's a mismatch numbers gun so it's a shooter that I can get for about $550.00. Any info will help, thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum
pictures are worth a thousand words. the s 42 is mauser. dont know what the crest is without pictures. the mw/jr1251 is the regiment/squad it was assigned to cant make sense of it in the police mebbe its military? it should have a sear safety if its police. and for 550 if it shoots I would buy it in a heart beat . what does the left side of the extractor say? there were no polish contract lugers its either a bulgarian or an american eagle reciever? |

If it's a functioning shooter, $550 is about the right price for an average one.
I can't help identify things without pictures. Marc

This is the crest on the chamber. I'll try to get more pictures when I get to the shop again. I don't have the gun yet because in my State you have to apply for a permit to buy handguns and it usually takes a month to get it.

If that picture is too small to make out the crest then here is one I found that looks just like it on a Radom rifle. Also the toggle is just stamped with 42 not S/42. Could this be just a pieced together luger and if so should I hold off buying it since it will be my first Luger?

More pics would help. Is it refinished, pitted, worn, have broken/worn grips, mis-matched/aftermarket magazine, bore condition...Need pics...
For $550, with an oddball crest, I'd buy it in a second...

The grip strap marking is a Reichswehr marking and indicates Minenwerfer Abteilung, Infantrie Regiment 12, Waffe 51.
