Default Back with an S/42

Greetings all.
I haven't posted here for quite awile but I have come back occasionally to browse. I see many of you are still here but some others seem to be conspicuously absent lately. I hope everyone is all right.
I kind of got side tracked from Lugers when I got interested in Walthers and Mausers. Walthers are much more affordable of course. In the course of putting together a collection of Mauser pistols I had to get at least one WWII Luger so here it is.

I'm guessing you mean the sideplate which looks like 78 in the closeup image shown. This image taken with a flash shows it is 70. Nevertheless the first image reveals the sideplate being a different color. Is this likely to be a forced match?

I think he means "1 matching magazine". The gun looks OK (nice) to me.

Hi Ron. I guess I need to learn (relearn) the jargon better. I was thinking 'MisMatch'. I still wonder about the difference in color and finish.
Thanks for the comments folks. I still need to get used to this business of adding 'Thanks' to posts. I owe a lot of thanks to many members here for past guidance.

I remember some previous threads discussing the mismatched color of sideplates on some rust blued lugers. I beleive the consensus was that the sideplate wasn't hardened as much as the other parts, so it took on the blueing differently, and consequently aged differently.
Very nice 1936 S/42!!! Thanks for showing.

Parabellus, sorry to have to tell you, but the magazine, while may have the correct number & letter suffix, it has the wrong Waffenamt Mark. The magazine you show has stick wing eagle over 63. ALL 1936 Military Mausers have droop wing eagle over 63 Inspection Marks.

Otherwise, it looks like a nice 1936 S/42 Luger.

Hi Frank, This magazine does not look messed with to me, and I think you will have to agree that the odds against a later magazine showing up with the very same serial number and suffix as Russel's gun are very high. Have you considered the possibility that the change from droop eagle/63 to stick eagle/63 inspection marks occurred earlier on magazines than on guns, perhaps much earlier? I own a later gun, a 2nd Variation 1937 S/42 with droop eagle marks, whose matching magazine, like Russel's, is stick eagle marked. Best regards, Norm

norme, well I almost never say never! But, the DE/63 magazines started about 6700d in the 1935 (G-Date) production and lasted until around 1000r of the 1937 production. Thus ALL of the 1936 production should be DE/63 Waffenamt Marked.

Regarding your 1937 magazine. The SE/63 magazines started around S/N 1r. The pistols were marked DE/63 & DE/63 from about 6300p until about 6000y, then they were marked SE/63 & DE/63 until about 1 ns. After that, until the end of the 1937 production, the inspection marks were SE/63 & SE/63.

Your X-Block 1937 should be marked with a double DE/63, while the magazine should be marked SE/63.

I would say it is about as possible to find a match of a 1938 magazine to a 1936 pistol, except the Waffenamt, as it is to located an exact match. Difficult, but possible!! I have found four matches for my Lugers.
