Default Walnut Grip Markings

I have a 1939 s/42 Luger which appears to have original checkered walnut grips. The inside of the left grip is marked with an R and the inside of the right grip is marked with a 2.
Does anyone know what these markings mean?

Thanks

Tom,
They are inspectors marks. You can also find various letters and numbers in many hidden places on Lugers. It doesn't have anything to do with the serial #.
