I have a 1916 luger for sale.
all numbers match including grips, except the magazine
ser#6948
I had it looked at, at the kittery trading post in Maine, by John. He stated it was one of the nicest he has seen and it looked unused.
I know nothing about guns so please ask any questions you would like and I will do my best to answer them.
I will post any high res pics you would like.

I was given a retail value by a gun dealer that was much higher than my asking price. They were willing to give 1500.00 cash on the spot. If you feel that I am asking to much I am open to constructive well informed advice.

Hi Ernie, While your Luger is in excellent condition, it is a very common variation. The offer, by a dealer, of $1,500.00 is a fair one. While there are probably people out there who might give you more, your unwillingness to ship limits your options. Regards, Norm

Thanks for the advise. Norme I am reluctant to ship as I have no experience with selling or shipping guns. I recieved this from a relative and am a neophyte when it comes to guns.

I did show this to a "luger expert" and moderator on this forum, who gave me the value. That being said "it is worth what someone will pay". And market conditions dictate current value.

Another option would be to send it to Ed Tinker (moderator on this forum) and Tom Whitman (respected forum member) to place it on consignment. They are both very trustworthy and their consignment fees are comparatively low.

I could be off on my asking price.

I was given a retail price in a gun shop as 3000.00+ and a street price of over 2000.00
John D owner and moderator of this forum is the person who examined this gun.
He said it was a common gun but, in exexptional original condition.
He was super knowledgable and a very nice guy. He did not seem like the type to exagerate.

I'm not sure where this pistol would sell for more than $1500. If it was pristine, 95%+ blue and straw, it might go for $2000. It's a very common year. The finish , even considering "camera penetration" is a scant 85-90%, the straw is only about 10-15%, and the magazine doesn't match.

Sorry, not to disperage your Luger, but in today's market $2000+ is extremely optimistic, $3000 is a moon shot.

Wow Ron,
I may not be a gun expert but my professional experience includes over twenty years as a professional in the sport industry, most recently as a vice president of sales and marketing for a global sport company. I am frequently asked my professional opinion and take that responsibility seriously.
That is exactly why I sought out the professionals in the gun industry. This piece was completely torn down and examined by who I was told was an expert on lugers. He was very professional and super knowledgeable, and his opinion seems very well respected on this forum. I then brought it to a second gun shop and finally a pawn shop. This how I came up with the value.
Without seeing the gun I feel it is impossible to give a complete and accurate assessment of condition and value, certainly four pictures cannot provide an complete and accurate representation of the gun (and that was not my intent). This is why I offered to provide additional hi res shots of any part.
That being said, I am a reasonable person and I am open to any reasonable offer. The gun is worth what someone will pay. I can sell it today for 1500.00 and that may be top dollar in this economy.

Here's a link to the Simpson Ltd. site. They are one of the top Luger dealers around. Their prices are considered to be somewhat high by most. Often because they are consignment pieces, and the owners want top dollar.

I have worked part time in 4 or 5 different gun shops over the last 30 years. Most gun dealers I have found, know very little about Lugers and / or their values.

To be very honest with you. If a dealer offered me $1500 for this Luger, I would take it.

I couldn't agree more with Ron. If you can get $1500 out of your luger sell it. It's a very nice luger but certainly not in the $2000 category. Lugers ,like Colts etc are a specialty collectors market. Very few gun shops have any idea what they are looking at. You are getting some good advise from long standing luger collectors. We on this forum have no axe to grind other than trying to help other collectors. Good luck. Bill

Hey bill,
my response to Ron has more to do with his ability to apraise my guns condition with four amature photographs, when no professional gun dealer was willing to do the same.

I am on this forum because I believe it is an excelent source of information. I was directed here by John D the founder, owner and moderator of luger forum. That is also why I respect John's opinion on the condition and value of this gun, as he is the one who has actually seen the gun.
I'll let you guys know what I get for it if I decide to sell it.

Ernie, I do not think Ron is "appraising" your Luger, he is just giving you reality. Common DWM 1916's by themselves with out the rest of the rig no matter how nice they are do not get over $1500. Now, if you had a matching mag, tool and a nice holster the price will jump. Add in a unit mark now you are getting up there. Curt

Matching magazine would add value. Tool and holster's value could be counted seperately, but usually would not create extra "system effect", because they are not numbered to the gun.

Maybe Kittery could sell it a little bit higher, but they would charge commission. I agree I have never seen such a nice piece in Kittery, their main handgun business are Glocks, SIGs, S&Ws, etc modern ones.
