Default Non-Dutch Rust

I see some lugers advertise as having light rust, etc. that should clean up fine. How does one clean up light rust/pitting without harming the rest of the finish?

If you use 0000 steel wool or even better brass 0000 wool and oil, it won't hurt the finish.

However, if it has had "light rust" then its hard to see how the finish would not be damaged by the rust, even if it was just freckeling.

That said sometimes there is a light rust, say under the grips and it cleans up great.
