Default Please help identify this DWM Luger

I just got this Luger from my grandfather. He was a US Army Staff Sargent in the 702d BSB, 2nd ID. He landed on Omaha D+3. For a long time I have known about this Luger. I finally have it in my possession. My grandmother is anti-gun and sold off a lot of other C&R firearms my grandfather had from the war and inheritances. This gun has not been fired since WWII.

I have all the photos on my own photo hosting site
http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/Icemedic/Luger/

From what I have read:
-Its a Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM)
-Serial is 2507 all the numbers match, even on the mag.
-Couple proof marks hard to see in the photos, one on the barrel and one on I believe the front link
-41 is stamped above the barrel, no idea what this means. Year of mfg?
-Any estimate on value? THIS LUGER IS NOT FOR SALE. Its part of my families history. Now if only my grandfathers brother would give back his 1911 from WWII.

Thanks

Scott, welcome to the forum!

We much prefer if you host pictures on this forum and not off site.

Unfortunately it is a mismatched gun, so value is only around $600-$700 max. I know it is mismatched because the 41 is a mauser stamping, and is for the date of 1941, DWM was out of the luger making business in the early 1930's, so either the receiver is replaced or the toggle.

thanks much. It is a puzzle, the numbers match, but the receiver is of a 1941.

27) What is a MAUSER BUMP?

Can anyone explain to me the real thinking Mauser had when they produced their early Lugers with the No Mauser hump and then some were intermixed with the Mauser hump and finally all were produced with no Mauser hump?

The early MauserĂ¢??s had mixed humps and no humps, but for instance, the Gs seem NOT to be humped, but they all have a thickened back where the hump is to better contain the rear axle pin during the rearward most movement of the receiver forks. The humped Mauser simply had some of the thickened rear frame REMOVED to form the hump.

I have no pictures of the Hump but it is formed at the very rear back of the frame above the lanyard loop. The back of the frame on DWM's is straight up vertical. Some K-dates, G-dates and 1936-S/42 MauserĂ¢??s are also straight up or vertical. The Hump causes the rear of the frame to not be vertical, it has a curved appearance to it. You can easily see it from the side. The Mauser Military Lugers are the only ones that have the HUMP, I think! It is interesting Mauser elected to remove that section of metal to return the frame length to the same as a DWM Luger!

Can anyone let me know when Mauser started building the rear frame "bump" to prevent the rear toggle link pin from falling out when the toggle assembly was in its full rear position ?
I have seen some Mauser S/42 coded Lugers without this "bump".
Should this "bump" occur on all Mauser Lugers, i.e. K-dates, G-dates, byf's, Banners, etc. ?
Some K dates had them on them and some Ks had a thickened back edge so if they wanted the HUMP, they could machine metal off the bottom edge of the thickened wall, it was an attempt to keep the rear axle pin from slipping sideways under full recoil. MOST MauserĂ¢??s will have it, but they would leave it out for a while then put it back in. Some Navy Lugers approached this problem from a different angle, they made the head of the pin LARGER.

I wonder if the gun was arsenal refurbished and was issued like that . If so its not really mis matched depending on what definition you are using !?

The matching mag adds considerable value and authenticity.
But its real value is as an heirloom and an important part of your family and countries military heritage . If it were my grandfathers gun that he bought back from the war,I would consider it "priceless"

Can I suggest you write down and document where possible everything you or anyone else knows about it . This will add provenance and value to the piece , and document it for the future . Do it now before it is all forgotten and ends up in the dustbin of history like so much else has.

Shouldn't there be a serial number on the front left side of the receiver? Can't see a number on the underside of the barrel either.
