Default Help! How do I buy a Luger from Canada?

A seller in Canada has a Luger I want to buy. I live in CA. We are both ordinary collectors and have never been involved in an international sale. My FFL dealers do not know how to handle the sale. Does anyone know the proper procedure?

Martin, I doubt that the BATF is approving any import permits for common military PO8s, but if the pistol is a commerical, you might have a licenced importer (Simson LTD, Randy Bessler or Ralph Schattuck) sumbit a form 6 to the import branch and see if they will appoved it.

As one who has gone down this path, let me advise you: STAY AWAY. You have Nothing, Zero, Nada, Zip in your favor. ATF is obstructionist; you are dealing through an importer (who is the party with privity of contract, which means he has legal recourse..you DO NOT); and the seller is in a foreign country which (SURPRISE!) is Anti Gun and isn't in the least bit interested in helping you, not to mention you have no standing in bringing suit.

Plus it takes a hell of a long time ..in my case, nearly 16 months, to receive something which was not even close to what was advertised.

Run away...

Tom

I have shipped a numbers of guns to Simpson and Leroy merz and a small dealer in minnesota.

I can't at all see al the problems you are talking about.

The ATF takes long time to approve the importpermits, in our last case 6 months.

but apart from that all our shipping and dealing have worked out perfectly.

Including guns that have been shipped from Simpson to me.

When it comes to guns and gunparts for repair that we get from US its much easyer.

I installed a Bomarsigth and a gripconversion on a gun and that was back in the US within a month.

Those stuff was shipped to us fromBArsto in california and they have an open exportpermit on parts.

With great reluctance I have to pass on the deal, which is a byf 1941 with mint bore and excellent wood grips, matching, at least 90% finish, beautiful 1935 police holster (obviously wrong for the gun), two mags, one numbered, black base FXO, and loading tool. Price for all: $800. I have seen pics and it is really a nice outfit.

There is a really strange 6'' Navy luger on Gun Broker. Anyone have any thoughts on this one? It too is offered out of Canada. Jerry

Default My Thoughts?

Speaking only for myself. There doesn't appear to be much wear on the finish leading me to believe that it has been refinished, but it could also have been hiding somewhere for the last 84 years...

The lack of a chamber date leads me to believe that it is either a commercial Navy or it could be a parts gun.

all that aside, I wish it were mine The price is way higher than I could afford, but I don't think he will have much trouble selling it...

There is nothing like a Navy!

-John

JOHN, It would appear at first to be a commercial but it is numbered in the military fashion with a suffix even. Also I do not have my Navy right before me but I remember a 1917 on the frame rail below the crown over M ? This does not have that either. The other place is the front sight. At the bottom of the front sight should have a date...The guy says it is all matching numbers. Looks good though. I paid $2000.00 for my Navy two years ago. Jerry

Rick, You are right about the dates but the 1908 had a grip safety. Also the first 19000 pistols had the Geischert placed in the top and the safety was backward. These were subsequently modefied and reversed to what we see today on most luger pistols. The reason for this is the soldier would holster the weapon and in doing so take the weapon off safety as it slid into the holster and possibly discharging the weapon. IE; Trip to the Naval Hospital,Inconvenience to Navy etc. Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I believe you will find that the 1908 Navy did not have the grip safety. Possible a very few in the single digit serial range did have the grip safety, but I would be leary of any that had it. The 1908 Navy was not chamber dated and is always in the B suffix range. The 1906 had the grip safety and no chamber dates. The 1908 is the same as the 1906 except no grip safety, and then came the 1916 and 1917 dated models. The gun on Gunbroker is a 1908 Military Navy.

LUGERHOLSTERREPAIR, you have the 1906 and the 1908 mixed up.

The 1906 1st issue navy unaltered has the saftey reversed.

The 1906 1st issue altered had the saftey corrected by having the 'GESICHERT' ground off both at the arsenals and at the factory, depending on delivery posessions, and then correctly stamped in. Of course the mechanical internals were also changed.

And Finally there was the 1906 navy second issue in which everything was corrected at the factory and there was no grounding to be done.

See Jan Stills book 'Imperial Lugers' pg 162

Also, the 1908 military issue have would have the new short frame and the 1906 would have the old long frame.

The 1908 commercial navy Luger may have either the long or the short frames. No chamber date on either the military or the commercial navy.
