Default C & R

How do you renew a C & R license and about how long does it take? I also wonder how to keep the forms. One letter I got from an agent, suggest a three ring binder. I thought bond would indicate something in which you cannot change the pages.

Richard,

You would normally get a renewal packge in the mail 1-2 months before your old one expires. But I think you can download the form as a pdf-file from the BATF web site as well. (OOps...looks like you cannot download them anymore...but you can call them and have them mailed to you...).

Here is the link :

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/nlc/newlook.htm

I was traveling and lost track of the date of my expiration and had to go through the 2.5 months to get a new one issued. But I recall folks on the Forum going through the renewal route reporting 3-4 weeks only.

I keep my wet-signed copies of my C&R's in my gun show binder (3-ring), and I keep my original, un-signed one in a document safe.

My C&R "Bound Book" is a bound book where the pages cannot be removed without tearing them out of the binding. When my local BATF wanted to see my book and other items about 1.5 years ago, they looked for evidence of any such page removals. My stuff was in order.

I think I got my Bound Book in mail order from a place in Santa Barbara CA named RK Enterprises. It has all the pages with preprinted forms with the correct columns and rows already done.

I see other collectors just use a standard Lab Notebook (pages bound to the binding) but then they have to ink in all the colums, row, header info on each page.

A Bound Book is defined as follows:

E. RECORDS REQUIRED ΓΆ?? LICENSEES

(E1) What is a "bound book?"

A "bound book" is a permanently bound book or an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages which must be maintained on the business premises. The format must follow that prescribed in the regulations and the pages must be numbered consecutively. [27 CFR 478.121 and 478.125]

This is from the "FEDERAL FIREARMS REGULATIONS REFERENCE GUIDE" 2005 pg 181 which a licensee gets every year, and can be downloaded in PDF format.

As I interpret this, loose leaf pages with page numbers are OK. I record everything on computer in an Excel file and print any pages that change and insert them in to a 3 ring binder.

My present license expires in June, and I received my renewal papers last week.

I am under the impression it should be "bound" also...

BTW, I scanned in mine (unsigned) and print out a couple whenever I need one, sign it, give it to the seller and I am ready to go.
