Default Luger ammo box on e-bay

Quote:
Authentic German WW II PB08 Luger Pistol Ammo Box. Measures 19inchesx14inchesx7inches when closed. Wooden box nicely jointed at the corners. Nice patina on wood and is painted black on top. Original shipping label printed onto cardboard and stapled on the lid reads:Southwestern Sales Company, Logan Street, New York. To: John England Sr., 29 Peach Orchard Drive, Riverdale, Rhode Island, 02915. Side of the box has original label in German and date of 1940. The inside of the box is metal. The inside lid has original labels and stamped with the date "12 March 1944".

Now, how in the world did this end up for sale in the USA in 1944 from a gun supply store?

The US label is obviously of recent origin. The use of zip codes did not come into play until the 60's or 70's.

I have seen that very same box offered on eBay about a year ago. George is correct about the label. Zip codes were implimented in 1963.

Nice box, nonetheless.

I have one similar to this box, use it to store CD's in it. They fit quite well.
The black painted lid is a bit of a shame.

Normally the text, in black, 'Luftdichter patronenkasten', would be painted on. (air sealed cartridge box).
