Default OT Mauser K98k extraction problem

Turkish 8mm cases hang up in the chamber of my K98k, making extraction difficult. I have had other ammo do this as well, but have also had some that work fine. Could this be a problem with the extractor or improper headspace? The rifle does have a mismatched bolt. Live rounds will extract fine, it is only the fired ones that give me trouble.

Look at the fired brass and see if it is still smooth, or if it has an almost sanded look. Sounds more like you have a rusty or rough chamber. If the brass is not still smooth after firing I would use 4/0 steelwool on a cleaning rod to polish the chamber. Pull the bolt back and with a flashlight look into the chamber for evidence of the rust or roughness.

Matt,

This is a common problem on the Rifle Forums and I think Johnny's answer is the first thing to try. Have you had the headspace checked on the rifle? If not, I would receommend this. Also, i have read good and bad on the 8mm Turkish ammo. Be sure to inspect the necks of the cartidges good as some of them will have split necks and can cause problems. Good luck, and polish the inside of the receiver good.

Default Johnny and Marvin,

Thanks for the suggestions. Looking at the chamber with a flashlight, it looks smooth and I can't see any signs of rust. I think this may be a headspace problem. I don't know of anyone locally who has the equipment to check headspace. Is there a way I can do this? I've been wanting a good shooter-grade Mauser and may just buy one of the Yugo 98k reworks or an M48.

As far as the Turkish ammo, other than the extraction problem, it shoots great, and at the prices it is selling for, I think I'll stock up.

Matt,

Give a try on the attached Forum on the Turkish Mauser Board. These guys are "nut" over the Turk mausers and have seen all the problems. Maybe they can give you some additional help with your problem.
